Anybody believe in banana jinx? After yesterday's trip with the Helen-H I becomes firm believer. We had the toughest fishing the Helen-H has ever had until 3:00 pm. I caught my first keeper cod around 3:00 PM and by that time the whole boat had only a few keeper.
When we entered in the cabin in the morning the first thing we noticed was banana on the table which brought by a mate for lunch. We joked about the bad luck with banana. But joke became reality. By two o'clock Joe couldn't locate fish even though he tried 200 per cent. Finally we decided to throw banana in the water by a unanimous vote without consent of the owner. By three o'clock ( normally it is time to go home) Joe finally located good concentration of cod and gave us two hours extra time to fill the cooler.
I must thank Joe for his extraordinary effort and giving us extra time. One thing is sure nobody can bring banana on my trip in the future.

got yelled by the mates...

It's only fate. One day I was boarding a party boat and that day, the mates were on banana patrol. Wouldn't you know it? I never brought bananas, EVER, except on THIS particula trip. The mates confiscated my banana (with a sigh of relief that they caught the banana).

Don't remember how the fishing was, but it seems most of the older anglers were aware of the banana jinx and stuck to it.

Does anyone know how the banana jinx got started?

Hi KILSONG,
LOLOL... Wow, the mate brought the banana eh?

When Capt. Joe found the body of fish... Was it before or after you killed the mate? :)

Next time you see the mate... Remind him of the ugly banana event and tell him that you have a killer porgy trip on that day and the crew wants their entire limit to be scaled with the heads on. That will teach him a lesson. ;)

Fortunately it was not too late and Capt. Joe found a body of fish to take home.

Welcome back buddy!

Kil,

I have fished with you numerous times
over the past several years and do not believe in the jinx. I have had just the opposite occur to me with the "Banana Jinx" I would say that about 80% of the trips I make are successful. It seems that the only times that I do have a bad trip are the times that I do NOT bring Bannanas on the boat. I will be happy to share them on my next trip. They will be laying on top of my cooler full of fish.

Alex,
Don't bring banana when you fish with me. Now I become nervous. Don't you remember we killed cod on the Fishhawk until Eddie started eating banana and after that we had only one cod.
Welcome back Alex. How was your trip ?

Hey Kil, it's interesting that you brought that up because on my last HH trip a week ago, I noticed a guy eating a banana on the way out and I gave him a bunch of crap about bringing a banana on a fishing trip. But, we had a decent day anyway.

One foot on a banana peel.....

The origin of the bad luck bananas may be as follows
Back in the early 1700's when the Spanish would travel throughout the South Atlantic and Caribbean trading goods, it is believed that a good number of those boats that did not return home had bananas in their cargo. The Spaniards would sail around the Caribbean trading for whatever the Queen might want, or what might bring them a handsome price back home, with their final stop been Cuba. There they would load up with bananas heading north out of Havana, pick up the gulf stream in the Florida straits which would aid them in getting home. The boats that did not make it were supposedly carrying BANANAS!
I also heard of a story of a banana boat found adrift with not a soul on board-all gone never to be heard from again-sounds like a good camp fire story;)

I was on a tuna trip a couple of years back and had the very same conversation
It was a three day trip. the first 2 days saw nothing no fish nothin.on the after noon of the secound day a guy comes out with a bunch in his hand
asking if anybody wanted one.one of the locals flips out and grabs the bananas and throws them over board and
gets in the guys face about the whole
banana thing.we had to separate them
because it was getting physical.Capt. comes out wants to know whats going on.
guy 1 tells Capt. about Bananas, mean time guy 2 is still being held back.
He wants first blood. Capt. Flips out
(just kidding)tells the fair Bananas
are bad luck. That night when we setup
for the chunk we had non stop action
from 8pm till 8am with 72 tuna caught
and half of that lost.It made a believer out of me.........
