While most tuna party boats prohibit the use of braided line for chunking on the East Coast, many boats allow the use of braided line for jigging. But still I found some charter/party boats don't allow braided lines even for jigging. If any member has experience of banning braided line(PE) on any tuna party/charter boat, let us know so that other members who want to jig with braided lines have prior knowledge and prepare mono lines for jigging or fish on other boats.

Nothing worse than thinking that you are prepared for a trip, especially a 2 or 3 day trip, only to find out that the boat frowns on using braid for jigging.
That is why I am posting this thread as one guy I know told me what to do as he found out last moment the boat he goes prohibit the use of braided line even for jigging.

Sunbeam in CT made me strip my braid off last year. Someone else on board didn't listen and kept it on... when they saw thet "I know what I'm doing" they apologized for making me take off the braid, but still I would caution anyone planning on jigging on that boat to be prepared for a hard time.

Don't know. Usually the excuse is that the braid will saw through other people's mono when lines cross (tuna fishing/bluefish/striper fishing, not bottom fishing) - also it's hard to untangle... some think it causes tangles - I've even been told that braid will score a hull, cut an anchor rope or even sever a prop from the shaft! Strange, I hardly even get line cuts from braid anymore and I've got "bankers hands" - LOL

Kil - what boat was your friend on?
It is charter boat called the Mimi out of Belmar, NJ.
It looks some boat out of Belamr, NJ don't allow braided line though I didn't have any problem on the Miss Belmar Princess out of Belmar, NJ. Capt Ken of the Mimi is very good bottom fishing captain as well as offshore, but it seems he is old fashioned guy who like to fish in old fashioned way. :)

I understand why some like braided line because of less stretch and more line capacity. I also understand that this thread is directed at jigging or popping tuna. We jig for bluefish & stripers from May till Dec and while we don't prohibit the use of braid, it is frowned upon. The main reason is because of the difficulty taking out tangles or backlashes that inevitably happen while fishing. I'm speaking about party boat fishing and this should not apply to private boaters or charters with a small groups. Braid is also more difficult to tie rigs with and can be a ***** to break out of the bottom so between the three downfalls it makes life for the crew more difficult.

Also as a moderator of this site I don't believe you should be descriminating against boats that do frown upon it's use. I just gave you a couple of legitimate reasons why it's use is frowned upon by the party/chater boat industry and they had nothing to do with being old fashioned.

It was an uphill battle for the use of braided line for jigging to get allowed on tuna party boats.
Capt Joe of the Helen H out of Hyannis, MA or Capt Steve of the Superhawk, LI never gave any problem on the issue of the use of braided line for jigging from the start. But most party boat captains didn't allow the use of the braided line for jigging until recently.
When the Jamaica out of Brielle, NJ started to allow it, several major tuna party boats followed.
As jig fishermen constantly move line/jigs, the tangle is minimal compared to bait fishermen. Once hooked tuna, it is pretty easy untangle with other lines if tangled. Guy who make tangles often are those who are dead sticking with bait unattended.

I've heard it can damage the cutlass bearing on the shafts. I work in SH and never heard that you shouldn't use it. YES it is a PITA to take out tangles. If you can't tie the knots required for braid you could not use it. I use it myself at times.

it would also help if people knew how to fish braid in a googans hands is a pain thats the problem here how many times does a 40 lb yft take a guy 20 min to bring in and tangling half the boat with three other guys fighting the same fish till the mates yell at them to slack off and free spool. thats a bigger problem than braid

Back when I was working Long range out west , it wasn't permitted to be used onboard.. There reasoning was a safety issue since we were live bait fishing and most guys fingers are always in or on the spool. Later on they aloud you to back your reels with a mono top shot..Im sure they allow it now but who knows haven't been out there in a while..Ken

Ken, you are out of long range boats for long. :)
Many guys use very short wind-on leader in 25" mono.

Thats entertaining, the Sunbeam was one of the first hbs I jigged with magicbraid over 20 yrs. ago . I didn 't advertise and fished with about a 50' topshot of 60 # mono . Back then I was all by myself most nights in the bough . I beleive Bobby (capt.) knew what was going on but nothing was ever said . Also did a couple trips when his dad (capt. john) took us out and fished magicbraid also. I beleive Bobby was the first capt. I have ever seen put in a substantial amt. of time jigging back then. He used mono and a bluefish jig and on most trips managed a fish jigging . I originally started jigging with mono but once spectra came out and I tried it my hook-up ratio improved drastically ( my opinion ). Can remember getting whacked all night long and not being able to get a hook - set with mono and watched Bobby miss quite a few fish also. Its' a good thing to inform pers. what hbs' are taking a stand against spectra . I honestly don 't see how that can be enforced as almost everybody I know or have seen uses spectra backing for chunking . If a nice fish is hooked up chances are that spectra is coming off the spool. There is no comparison between mono and spectra for tuna jigging over 100'. The deeper you are with mono the more your hook-up ratio decreases .( Again just my opinion ).

Bobby was really nice to everyone on the trip and he even borrowed my jigging setup for a while to try out the rod because he liked the way it looked. The guy who made me strip off my braid was a mate and he did it before we even left the dock. Maybe I just had bad luck with that.

I drove to the Sunbeam to see how they were doing with striper fishing at night after fishing cod on the Frances Fleet about 20 years ago. Stripers were scarce in 20 years ago. They said they catch big stripers at night. But I didn't have enough money for the fare. I asked them whether they could give me credit to go on the boat and I pay later. Surprisingly they said yes.
They even offered me to lend a pull money for me. I believe the size limit that time was 34 - 36 inches (?) and I managed to catch a nice 38 inches striper with live eel on the trip. I brought several friends with me next week and eventually chartered one of their fleet for night striper fishing. They have a nice operaiton.
