Hey guys, I began fishing from the surf about 1 1/2 years ago. I live in Long Beach and have done all my fishing from the beach or over at a couple of south shore piers. My question is, without any spot burning , where can I go to fish the back bays? I'm just looking to be pointed in the right direction as to public access fishing spots on the south shore. Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and I hope everyone has a great/ healthy 2008 fishing season.
Tom

Use google earth, or microsoft virtual earth (bird's eye view) and look for good structure - points, bridges, bars, channels, etc.) Once you get a good handle on the general layout of the back bays - then it's time to do a lot of walking around looking for more specific details, depth, holes, ridges, etc. Before you go out - read RichTrox's Hey,Go find your own spot thread about three times.

I am also looking for some more back bay spots. What are some good public access spots?(I just mean a point to start hiking at) I hit the bridges on the Wantagh but to get further back I'm not sure its feasible or even legal to go traipsing through marsh.

I dont think its legal to go park under the wantagh bridges but I see people on that marshy area all the time as I go by. They dont have bikes so I dont know how they get in there but I would love to find out.

As for other back bay spots, I am looking for places to go as well.

I believe they are officially considered NYS Protected Wetlands, and it is not legal to be back there. This according to a not so friendly State Trooper
. Parking anywhere around the bridges is also a no-no and tickets and tows do happen
. The good news is that hopefully by the fall, they will re-open the Green Island Access parking to NYS night permit holders
, so if you don't have your NYS permit, move fast as you are almost out of time.

Rich,

I hope you are right about the green Island
fishing access but I heard that that was not going to be reopened until the bridge that they are working on is finished or almost finished. The problem is I pass over that bridge at least once almost every week from spring through the fall and The workers are never doing anything and in the past few years it appears that very little progress has been made.

The 3rd Wantagh Bridge......

is a shining example of what bad planning, bad management, and lack of oversight or accountability can do for you, the humble NY tax payer. Absolutely incredible

Where's my soap box????? OK, you got away lucky this time ;)

Jones Beach Piers

A good spot to try would be Field 10, Jones Beach Piers. Park Closest to the very first pier when you come in to the lot & you can walk the beach almost to the Meadowbrook Bridge. I've never walked that beach, but have caught many a fish from the boat close enough to the beach. I don't think this is "spot burning" as very few people walk that stretch & there is plenty of room for everyone. Good luck.
