Hi Folks,

The other day I was roaming around Flushing town in Queens and I stopped at this place called First Fishing supplies. It was a very nice B&T shop with lots of goodies...and there is a gentleman by the name of Teddy who seems to know his fishing stuff! :)

One thing that really captured my eyes were the AVET REELS. it looks durable and the price is very affordable.

Can anybody tell me anything about the SX, JX, LX and ProEX models?

Thanks!

I only have one, a Calcutta 250 size SX, which came out a couple months ago. The Jigmaster size JX and LX models first appeared last year. The 4/0 size EX just came out and offer 2-speed and single speed options.

All their reels are machined aluminum lever drags with the best freespool that you have ever seen on any reel. 2 screw takedown and low maintenance too. And they are priced right. The reels are new, so they haven't been fished much, but since they are designed for tuna fishing, I doubt that our local stripers and fluke will break them.

They have a few unusual features. While they have the same 4:1 and 5:1 gear ratios that all the other manufacturers have, they also offer 6:1 and 8:1 with planetary gearing. I don't know what the benefits of planetary gearing are, but they have it. Their anodizing is superb and looks like it will hold up better than the anodizing of the big manufacturers. Their NJ distributor (based near Sandy Hook) is stocked with parts and prepared to offer local warranty service. That is probably the best feature of all.

Oh yeah, MADE IN AMERICA!

Their pricing/quality/features make them absolutely unique in the market. There is really nothing to compare them to. Do you you need anything other than a $60 Penn or Abu to catch fish? Probably not, but it is nice to fish with something special.

Would I buy anything which had only been out for a year? Well, I wouldn't buy the first year of a car, but a reel for $155?, what the heck, go for it.

Skatemaster,

Thanks for your informative info.! I did noticed the aluminum lever drag and it's a beauty. In general, those reels are just plain too sexy and it looks like it can take a beating!

I am sure it will put ProGear out of business soon and probably put a small dent in the big manufacturers.

Do you know if they have lower gear ratio (3._) series? Also, I have NO idea why the 8.1 ratio? What's with that? It's probably great for speed jigging... but what happens when the true large connects?

Avet reel

Hi Al I posted this a few weeks ago on the boating board, I got mine at first fishing/diving
" I have been seeing stuff about the "SX" model online lately, so I purchased one today, looks nice, feels smooth, cant wait to rig it up.

This model came set up for casting, with a factory installed power handle for $10 more. It is a lever drag reel with a clicker, with a free spool - casting - general retrieval - and direct drive (strait gear, no drag). looks like a serious piece, for $170 the guy at the shop said it is the most innovative reel for the money, and that it puts "pro-gear" to shame. Looks like a lot of fun www.avetreels.com

When the SX was released, the list price was $180. Then someone noticed that the advertising stated that the reel included a reel clamp. Which it didn't, since the reel is the size of a Calcutta 250. Well, Avet's response was to drop the list to $155. They now have an optional reel clamp available at the prohibitive price of $37.50, but like I said, who needs it. For some reason, they have not posted this saga on their webstire, and as a matter of fact, haven't even changed the web site price. But if you call Avet, they will tell you that it is $155. And yes, there are guys who sell it for less than the Chark, but not by much.....

3:1 gear ratio - maybe someday, keep sending emails asking for it :)

8:1 gear ratio = wahoo

Pro Gear - I'd guesstimate a price decrease or a much stronger focus on their graphite sideplate reels.

Avet will have every manufacturer adjusting prices.

I've Been Waiting

I ordered mine from Charkbait a couple weeks back for 155 with free shipping, reel cover and t-shirt. I've been waiting because the gold color is out of stock, but they're communication regarding the delay has been very very good. As long as it is here by April it's a good deal.

Cat14361,
Just wondering, why not use it for blackfishing? When I first looked at the reel, bottom fishing did crossed my mind and casting too. After inspecting it carefully, I don't doubt that it will cast nicely.

For example, who ever thought that the Newells would be a great casting reel? ;)

Hey MattyBlazer,
Haven't even spooled it yet? Geesh… Whatchawaitingfor? :)
