I was talking with my uncle who has been shark fishing for years but has given it up because of age and he was telling me that they used to tear newspapers into strips and send them out in the slick. Now I know of alot of other ways to attract sharks but are they really interested in yesterdays news?

Yes, that is something we did years ago, and still do from time to time when it strikes me. Last time we used it I kind of overdid it,......... had several large plastic bags of shredded paper. It was in every nook and cranny of the boats for months after.

Wonder why they like it?Anyhow, what are some of the other odd ways you guys use to get the sharks to the boat.I was thinking co2 bombs in another thread and I also read about saving fish scales and freezing them in bunker milk then when your out there defrost em and let them out in the slick.

The chum is what really brings them in. The fish scales, newspaper, glitter, etc is just a visual aide that may raise their curiosity. Without the scent the others will not bring the sharks in.
Your right chum is key.I just wanted to know what other tactics some guys use.We also blast the music out there too.

do any of you guys go and try to find the sharks rather than have the sharks find you? I know that could get expensive now with the price of gas but was just wondering in prior, less expensive times. I don't shark fish but it seems like everytime I am traveling out to the tuna grounds, whether it's mudhole, gloryhole, chicken, or the Hudson, we see two to three fins swimming around. One last year was a great white. So does anybody get a pair of bino's and try and seek out the sharks?

while on the water either running or not eyes are always sweeping the horizon. We usually pick a spot to run to and have plenty of times never made it there either because we saw a shark, or a lot of bait. Big ocean to just go ridng around for a fin though.

I thnk most sharks spend better then 99% of thier time below the surface so I try to go to areas they are likely to be but not necessarily seen on the surface. If I see one up top great, but that's not the norm.

If Doughboy sees this thread he may have some pictures of chumming with shredded paper, LOL, lot's of shredded paper.

goodeats,
On one shark trip last august on my friends boat we were headed out of moriches to fish the 20 fm fingers. About a mile south of the M buoy I saw a mako finning. we pitched a bait to it and the fight was on. But he just swam right to the boat. We released the ~100 pounder.

LOL, thanks Chris, you can see the paper all over the covering boards, it was everywhere that day.

If anyone does try it, check your deeper baits often as the paper sometimes catches the line, slides down, and makes a mess of the bait.

EXTRA, EXTRA READ ALL ABOUT IT

The newspaper idea is by no means new. It was cheap and an added non eatable attracter that would float out at the same level of the chum. The long strips would look like schools of sand eels or bait fish.
The chum scent gets the trail going and the paper would give the shark a visible trail to also follow.
But that was a long time ago when the numbers of sharks were much higher.
When we shark today it is just chum and lots of it, with not to many chunks. We do not want anything in our slick that can distract a shark from coming right to the source of the slick.
It is always nice to get an eyeball first on the shark to size him up and make your choice on tagging or harvesting.
99% of all large trophy threshers & makos always took the closes bait. Most we saw some not as they came in too hot and hard.
The closes rod is usually the hot stick and free spool and a time setup it keys so you do not snap terminate tackle or mainlines with a quick setup and heavy drag.
The only additional attracter we use is the magnet; the main reason being is that it is within eye view and next to the source.
In closing we use no unseen attracters in our slick other that chum.
