last one I caught was in January.. not an expert but I believe the return trip is offshore not inshore.. they seem to hang around mag pier until the water gets too warm over there may be your best shot at them. Bunker are in though if you are looking for bait?

We get Blueback Herring and Alewifes up here in Kingston in rondout Creek each year. Along with the Shad, which is in the Herring Family also. They stay into early June. They arrive in April. What is a "River" Herring? Mike?

Not dwelling on the past however when I was young we use to go down to the herring run in Middleboro and catch them with our hands and squeeze
their bellys the males went back and the females were for their delicious eggs, fried up ... YUMMY! I haven't had those for more than 2o years and now of course everyone knows theres a limit and very few compared to what once was. I use to take them dip them in eggs and shake them in a bag with maple oatmeal and fry them in butter a bit of salt and they were good, talk about something my palate missses. The rest of the fish went into our garden.
