PICKED UP AN ARC DEHOOKER LAST YEAR AFTER SEASON CLOSED
GOT A CHANCE TO USE IT
FOR YOU BAIT GUYS WHO CATCH AND RELEASE I RECOMMEND IT
YOU EASILY UNHOOK DEEPLY HOOKED OR GUT HOOKED FISH
AND YOU DONT LEAVE A HOOK AND LEADER INSIDE THEM
DEFINITLY REDUCES MORTALITY
GREAT TOOL

Mike,

I agree. I own 3 of them and in a few sizes as I rarely take a Striper out of the water now. For those who are looking to purchase one, do it as it is a great tool. It looks complicated to use but practice on a Box. Take a big box and with a hook on a leader, embed it on the open edge/ledge/side of the box. Put your foot inside the box, grab the leader with your left hand, run the curl of the ARC unit down to the shank of the hook, give it a quick push and pull....you can get more info on their site....This tool is great for toothy Bluefish and I teach all on my charters how to use it.

****One thing I always recommend is to always wear Sunglasses or some sort of protective eye wear anytime you are unhooking a fish as a hook on a leader or sinker can always be thrown loose with a nice headshake..

Frankie,

The ARC units are very much different than the J hook removers as in many cases you have to grab the leader and lift the fish out of the water in many cases as you have to use the weight of the fish and lift it higher and completely out of the water and usually the fish will come off provided you have it lip hooked. If the hook is deep the J hook style removers will not work as you lose leverage.

The Arc's are designed with a unique curl at the end and this is where the hook goes when you push down and pull sharply. This is a God Send!

Frankie,

Check their website and if you have a high gunnel on your boat go with a longer one plus it keeps your hands further away from toothy fish. I have used them on Barracuda, Kings, Bluefish and Stripers and you can use them on Fluke as well. A great and versatile tool...

I am a surf fisherman, so carrying it on my belt is what i am looking at. Less is better. The 24" dehooker may be a bit of a hassle to hang on my wader belt. I am also pretty short so that is even more of a hassle. Will the smaller ones be as easy or do I really need the larger one?

I had arranged for a 10% discount for all noreasters last year, but I don't know if they'll still honor the deal. If you want one try calling ARC directly and mention my name MakoMike or Mike Plaia ( I don't remember which they wanted used) and ask them for the 10% discount. If someone does order one, please post back and let us know if they are still honoring the deal.

it seems the arc dehooker works very well on fish caught on any bait hook. i was wondering if it would work, on say bluefish caught on jigs(i imagine it might not work so well)?

judgeing by the video on their site you have to slide the dehooker down the line to the hook i dont think the hole is big enough to slide over a jig.. i have never used one but i think im going to get one they look like they work great

Dehooker

This is a story about a dehooker, not an ARC Dehooker per se, but a dehooker.

I had a little puppy that had eaten a piece of mullet that someone had left on the dock with a hook inside .

Of course the puppy was deeply hooked and in great pain. You could see the hook in the back of its tongue. We held the dog down and used the dehooker to remove the hook and leader. We washed the area down with some kind of antiseptic mouthwash.

The dog recovered and lived some happy years. He wouldn't eat any bait left on the dock any more preferring to eat dog food from his bowl.

End of story. BR

Not so fast...

You're directed to use it by holding onto the leader with one hand and feeding the dehooker down the gut with the other and pulling the hook out. So far so good, but now you have the leader in one hand and the dehooker in the other - what about the fish? If it's a bass still in the water that needs reviving you've got a problem if you're not quick enough to reach down and grab it before it drifts away. Need to get teh fish in the boat unless you have someone there to help.

Not quite right. The ARC dehooker doesn't "pull" the hook out, it pushes against the ben of the hook to force it out the way it went in. Using is is a little hard to describe, it takes a little bit of a "knack." You have to put a little slack in th leader just as the dehooker hits the bend of he hook, so that the hook can be forced out backwards. You also don't want much tension on the leader after the hook comes out, or you risk hooking the fish again!

I'm with you Mike but what you do is pull, granted gently, on the leader to keep the hook engaged with the dehooker as it comes out. Still though you may be left with a fragile fish in the water. I bought mine 2 years ago at the A.C. show after Gary Caputi demonstrated it. I'm all for C&R and the gadget does work very well if you bring the fish on board. If you're alone and the fish is in the water maybe not so good.

What size ?

For bass and blues , what size are you guys using , the 16 inch or 24 inch ? 24 inch seems the way to go.

I am going to buy the one that I need, price doesnt matter, but the 24 inch is $30 more then the 16 inch , that is a pretty big disparity.
