I have a medium action 9 foot ugly stick as a backup. Ive caught bass up to 25 lbs on it and dont think a fish of 40 lbs would be a problem either. Its how you play the fish that counts, not the rod persay. Throwing lures was never a problem. Throwing bunker could be depending on the size of the chunk etc. Too much bend. However if your casting 2 1/2 oz pencil poppers you'll outcast everyone out on the water. I

f your throwing 3oz of lure i dont see there being a problem, bait on the other hand could be very tough.

30lb test mono? thats alot of poundage do you really need that much anyway. The most i go up to surf fishing is 20.

What kind of mono are you using A.K.A Brand?
I only use Ande...I dont like fireline...because im partial to baitcasters at times too..I like mono for everything including setting the hook etc... Guess im old fashion at 22 years old :-X
