I just received my 8ft. Ugly Stik, it is 10-25#, 3/4-3 lure, and Medium action....

Anyway,I was thinking about using it for Blues/Stripers before I got it, now that I got it, it just feels too "soft" to actually throw 3 ounces, lets alone fight a big striper.

Do any of you guys that use Ugly Stik's have a problem with the softness of the tip? Or am I just worrying for nothing?

Also, do you guys think throwing 30lb mono on it, even though it's only rated to 25# is a bad decision?

I had 20# on my Penn 11' last year and was always having problem with it breaking or getting frayed before I went to fireline.... I use 30# on my conventional outfits (Striper, Blacks, etc) with no problems, but switching back to 20# should be no problem if you think it's too heavy.

Also, do you think using fireline on the Ugly Stik is a good idea?

The only thing I'll be tossing with the Ugly Stik is lures, the occasional bucktail, and jigs.... My Penn 11' will be my chunking stick for now on.

BTW, I just went in my backyard and tried tossing a 3oz. sinker, it was freaking amazing! The line I was using was 15# that I have on my FinNor Lite reel, well, to make a long story short.. The sinker is stuck in a tree that was about 210 feet away! The Ugly Stik can definitely toss some weight!

Yep, it's a big backyard..... The backyard if I'm right is 300 feet long by 160 feet wide...... We live on a Cul-De-Sac and were one of the firsts to move in so we have a nice large yard. Makes for good practice casting with weights.

Also good for the fish scraps, we usually trek the shells, bones, heads, anything that wasn't eaten to the treeline in the deepest part of the backyard and by morning, everything is gone. Gotta love those racoons.. and the gopher that lives under our deck!

I only use Ande mono too.... Although, I have some clear High Impact Stren on my backup spool because I ran out of Ande to put on it.

On my 11', I have the fireline (All right stuff, lets me see when the robins are stealing my bait)!

My 7'6" Flounder rod has 15# Green Ande.

The new 8' rod is going to have 20# Yellow Ande Tournament.

And my two boat rod have 50# Clear Ande and 30# High-vis Yellow Ande.....

I'm very impartial to Ande, the fireline was an experiment that worked out well, but probably won't be putting it on any other rod.... I'm like you, almost 21 and kinda stuck to Mono....

Docfish,

I won't be using Fireline on the Ugly Stik, going to stick with good ole' mono. The fireline I have is on a pen rod that has ceramic guides, and sho far I haven't had a problem.
