What kind of Guides are on the rod?
You mentioned that you want to use Fireline. Most ugly sticks have plastic guides. If you use fireline your top guide and the line will cut into each other with the very first decent fish that you hook.
Don't get me wrong, I love my ugly sticks. I have light five footers for each of my children. We've landed fluke to 7lbs and blues to 14lbs on them with nothing more than 12lb Ande. They are great rods if you set your drag light and know how to let the bend of the rod play your fish.
