Hey Guys, hitting Punta Cana Dominican Republic in a couple of weeks for a little R&R. But as you know.....that will include fishing. :) So, I did some googling on charters down there, but was wondering if any Noreasters fished down there that could possibly save me some leg work. Any comments or Suggestions about the island and fishing would be greatly appreciated as well. Thanks!

Punta Cana is awesome,..

I didnt fish down there. Go to the website of the resort your staying at and read the comments on it. That will give you a good idea of whats in store. The beaches are really great! The food was real good, if your sensitive to new stuff stick with what you know you like, their is some weird food. Theres bars everywhere on the resort if you want to party like a rock star. You might like to shop at the huts on the beach. If something goes for say 100$ offer them 30$, seriously, then they come down to 70 and you buy it for 40$. Almost everything thing they are selling is a knock off or fake or a rip off so be careful. Offer them some ridiculously low figure and walk away, they'll come running after you :) If you see yellow shirts coming up to you, just be rude to them and tell them to go away or theyll follow you all week. It might not be your style but you have to be rude, youll see, unless you want to buy a timeshare down there or send one of them to medical school. Be very careful off of the resort, the area is scary poor. I wrote a report last march on it, it might come up on a search. Have fun !

Hi Barb,

Grab yourself a Medium Light travel rod and reel (4 or 5 piece), some bait holder hooks (1/0 and 2/0) and egg sinkers. Also bring a few 1/4 and 1/2 bucktails and small rind along with a few 1/2 to 1 oz tins. Short leaders (20lb fluro around 12 to 16 inches will do it) and is a must for the toothy critters. Before the beach gets crowded cast along the open beach, I did and had a ball with small tropical fish and a few nice size snappers..(I think that is what they were :) ). Ask the chef (or should I say tip him/her) for some clams or baby shrimp. Every time I do a tropical vacation this is what I do. Use the same thinking that you do here in the skinny water (your playground already) and you will do great. There are some rules and they may ask you to move down the beach away from the swimming area but fish until you are told different. The sight fishing is great with the clear water so bring the sun glasses. Nice catch and release vacation action with $0 attached to it. Don't be surprised with the crowd you draw every time you land a fish. If there are kids on the beach, let them cast if you are catching and they will have a memory of a life time from that vacation.

PS: Don't forget pliers...lot's of teeth on fish you may have never seen before. Also bring a camera and show some fish photos for the Noreast crowd.

Enjoy,

Ken

Hey Ken, thanks for the reply. Hey, what are the rules on the plane as far as bringing a rod, tackle and tools?

Check it all on

If you check it on and have a carry case you are good to go. There are some pretty compact kits that are reasonable from Shakespeare that pack very small. Not the greatest but reasonable, and since you are not shark hunting it will work. What I like is how compact it is and it will even fit inside a suitcase and has compartments for tackle.

Checking rods/reels

If your rod case is shorter than your shoulder (from the ground) you can take it carry on as the length limit is the same as a crutch. I have done this on a few flights to mexico.

I stayed at the Melia Caribe Tropical last February. The place was beautiful. Unfortunately, I got sick towards the end of the trip!!
8
 I was especially careful that I didn't drink the water too!! But it still got me. I got f'd when it came to fishing also!!
Here's the story:

They have all of these huts on the beach that offer all kinds of activities. Some are part of the hotels, or timeshares; some aren't. I looked at some boats at the front desk and some on the beach and everyone has the same 3 pictures and discriptions of the boats:confused::rolleyes: So, I decided to book a trip through the hut run by the Melia Caribe. They showed me a picture of a 45' Viking and told me that I would be fishing on that boat. I figured at least I would be on a nice ride
. Well Tuesday morning came and I was told that someone would pick up our charter on the beach at 7am. Around 8am a guy pulls up in a skiff to pick us up. He drove us about 1 mile down the beach where we got onto an OLD piece of ^%$# 31' bertam!! This was NOT the boat I was told I would be on!!
I tried to talk to the captain, but neither he nor his mate spoke a word of english!! The boat has zero electronics and only 1 running motor!!

So we then preceded to troll around for the next 4 hours to catch absolutely NOTHING!! We even found a school of tuna busting the surface. Trolled through them 2-3 times without even a knockdown!! Not that we had a chance anyway with the 4 rusty hook baits we were drowning!!

When we returned to the beach we imediately went back to the little hut and made a stink about how bad that trip was!! The guy apologized and said he would put us on a better boat on Thursday for $40 a person. (The first trip cost us $80 per person). I didn't want to be bothered wasting another $40, but my wife insisted!!

Thursday morning came and I got hit with the stomach thing and spent the next 2 days heaving my guts out!!
My wife went on the fishing trip with her sister instead of me and ended up on a 36' Tiara that caught a few mahi and 1 white marlin. It was a split charter and my wife and her sister only caught the mahi. Some other couple caught the marlin.

The boat kept everything, and when the people on the boat asked about keeping a couple filets of mahi, they were told that they are diseased in the carribean and not edible!!:confused: I said to my wife, "then why did THEY keep it????"

Anyway, I'm off to Hawaii in 2 weeks!!
I hope this trip will be better!!
I will be in Maui for 1 week and Kaui for 1 week. I'm thinking I'll probably jump on an inter-island flight to Kona for a couple of trips

Hola my friends!

Buenas tardes! ;)

Back from Dominican Republic. Did not download pics yet, still unpacking.

Trip was on a scale one to ten, a nine. The only thing that did not make it a ten was I did not fish. :( No boats going out, seas to rough. I thought Aruba had a lot of wind, I would say DR was double.

Went on a snorkling trip one day, as usual, seas were kicked up, we went anyway. There was about 12 of us on board. Nine were queasy and wanted to head back after 2 minutes in the water. Me and another couple snorkled about a half hour until we were ordered to come back because everyone was antsy to get back, they had enough.

Food was pretty good. Me and Grace ate and drank everything including the fish, water, beef, pork, ect....we did not get sick like people made it out to be. But then again, maybe it was the fine beverages they have down there killing any bad bacteria.

Hotel was beautiful. Pool was huge, dancing at the clubs on the tables until the wee hours of the morning. Casinos were open until about 4. Live entertainment every night. Flights good.

Buenas noches
