I just recieved my recreational lobster permit and tags from the DEC today and I am itching to try lobstering in Raritan Bay. Im picking up 5 pots on friday and am looking for any advice on where to fish, bait choices etc. Any info would be appreciated.

Yeah thats my fear. Theres so much space out there and not many lobster pots so I wouldnt even consider setting up next to someone else. I also fear that if the string is marked with buoy markers that the traps will either be raided or stolen. The guy I am getting the traps form suggested a ghost trawl where the string is just marked on gps and dragging a grappling hook to pull them up. I dont know if this is legal or not. He also suggested setting the traps across a channel, now that I know is illegal so I dont think I will try that. I am just so worried that someone will steal the gear or just cut my buoys if I leave them out. People can be really stupid sometimes.

Lobstering.

I put my recreational trap in the LI Sound off of Rye Playland and the ******* lobstermen cut my line. I was not right next to, or on any commericial pots, but I strongly believe they did it. Be careful or you will lose everything. The comm fisherman and lobstermen think they own the water.

or maybe it was a fellow recreational fisherman that wanted your traps. how can you just go and accuse comm. fisherman to stealing/cutting your traps off when you have NO IDEA who did it. storongly believing a comm. fisherman did it means absolutly nothing. theres alot more rec guys driving by your buoys then commercial guys.

Lobstering in Raritan Bay

. It is lobbying by the commercial fisherman both lobsterman, dragnetters, the whole bunch of them that negatively impacts the rights of recreational fisherman.

Lobstering

I dont want to hear a sob story of how hard thier jobs are and thier just trying to make a living. The rest of us are out there trying to make a living and look to fishing as our release or relaxation. They have no right to screw with us when we are just trying to have fun.

All the more reason im thinking about a ghost trawl. I know its a no no but I think I would rather take my chances of losing my pots on my own rather than have some idiot come and either cut my lines or haul my stuff.

Now when I come across a goast trawl, (almost always unmarked - so how could one get it back to you) it's usually when I set fresh gear and get tangled up - because I didn't know the string was there, hey, it was UNMARKED!! you know THAT trawl is going for a walk.

I'll say it again, ALL gear, rec. and comm., must be marked. Hope my DEC buddies are reading this and seek you out. Don't be a dummy, it will cost you more in fines to get your gear back from them than to go buy your bugs at the market.

Half and Half

I am way out of my league here but I wonder if it would be a good idea to set up a marker to a weight and drop the traps separately so that the passing recreational dude probably wouldn't be into searching for it with a grappling hook, all they would do is pull up a cinder block and the string of traps would be there waiting for your grappling hook. The traps would be marked so that the commercial guys would leave the area alone.
I am sure it's not right because the marker probably has to be attached but maybe it would be a compromise?
