Anyone using a Ball Scupper?
either the T&H Marine Flow-Max or the Rabud ball scuppers on their boat?

I was thinking of putting in a set of these as a spring upgrade.

if you have or have seen them operate 1st hand - how do you think they perform??

thanks in advance. have a great 2008 season.

I'll second that question, I put the scupper with the rubber flap on my boat last season, they sucked so bad I cut the rubber flap off of them while I was out at sea

I'm thinking I want to move to this type instead.

I had the TH marine flo-max scuppers on my last boat. They worked great! They have a little set screw on the outter cover to keep the cover itself in place. Great idea making a scupper that can be easily removed for cleaning. These also have a larger drain hole than the competitors. Only thing I didnt like was actually NOT the scuppers fault but....my boats self bailing deck sat a hair a little too close to the water line and the scuppers would sit just a little bit into the water and MAN did they get dirty. Always wished the boats waterline was an inch higher. So that may be an issue depending upon your boat. As for the scuppers themselves...

Hope this helps

I also had them in my other boat no problems. A little slow emptying if alot of water came in but other wise no problems. But if your not going to play in the breakers I don't think you have to worry about that. Hey give it a try if they don't work out you can alway change them out right?

I think these are a great scupper when there is mostly water on the deck. If there is any debris on the deck some time it won't make it through and can clog. Put the largest size you can in. I think the biggest one I have seen is 2 1/2"

My little boat has them. Its a 21 ft Alcar. Looks like a small center console with a phone booth in the middle. Like a small commercial clammer. Anyway, Ive got them and honestly I think Im gonna remove them and just slap some rubber garboard plugs in the holes. The problem is that they very easily clog. Any debris on the deck washes into them and clogs as soon as you start to plane. Swivels, ice, bait, leaves, whatever. Im constantly leaning over the transom "rolling" that little ball trying to clear the scuppers. It may just be my boat but Im going to start just pulling the plug to clear the decks from now on. Gets scary in the fall with a heavy rain and fallen leaves and youre sitting on the couch at 11 pm wondering if they clogged or not..

I have them on my boat. They work pretty well but you HAVE TO KEEP THEM CLEAN. Otherwise they get will get fouled with marine growth or worse, with barnacles. Once barnacles attach themselves to the flexible plastic ball seats the game is up and you'll have to replace the whole unit. Just back off the locking screws, twist off the plastic cage and and clean the seats with a soft brush. Also, if you leave your boat in the water 8 months out of the year, like I do, replace the stainless steel screws that hold them to the transom every 2 years. If you don't the the screws will corrode just below the heads and when you try to remove the screws only the screw heads will come off and the threaded part of the screw will remain in the transom.

6to8 I second the motion on the rubber flaps- been there done that got the tee-shirt. I now put plugs in those scuppers before heading out the remove them when I get back so wash down drains out, and leave them out for rain water to drain. If it werent for the fact that it really keeps the bilge cleaner I'd almost be sorry I put em in at all.

folks - not to belabor this thread, but I lost the instructions and the pin holding the outer shell on and am about to install 4 I bought over the winter.

Can I replace the pin with a cotter pin? Also, did you use flat head ss screws to install? I presume only 4 of the 8 screw holes were used, because the other 4 would interfere with the outer shell twisting on.

Thanks (I dont want to screw this installation up - mine are the TH Marine ones)
