I recently purchased a used wreck anchor. It is a steel tube with 4 steel rebar rounded hooks coming off. My question is how should these be used in fishing and setting up on Wrecks. I fish mostly on AB, Hempstead, Fishing Line, etc. I have a 25 foot Grady White. I have anchored at wrecks before with my standard anchor on a winch but due some hangups and difficulty getting them out I am lookin got use the Wreck Anchor more. I keep a total of 3 anchors on the boat 2 regular and one wreck. Any info is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Mike,
Basically use it like an ordinary anchor, but you'll have to use less scope since your anchor will be right on the wreck. Then if it hangs up just power it out and bend a rod or two, you can rebend the hooks easily.

To use as a PRIMARY anchor go uptide/wind of the piece as you would with a regular anchor, drop it down let out line (as you would with a regular anchor), when you have let out enough scope, drag the hook back into the piece. Once you have hooked, then and only then shorten up the scope and put the boat where you want it. Never tie off anywhere but the bow unless it is very calm and/or very light current, otherwise you could sink your boat, it's been done many times.

Thanks for the great info. I appreciate it. I guess my knowledge was always not to anchor off any other area then the bow unless I am in the back bay in calm water. Your description of how to do this is very clear. I am getting out Sunday and will let you know how it all goes. This is why I am asking to do it the safe way.

I always thought you anchored up well off the piece with your regular anchor then drifted back over your wreck or rockpile and then used the wreck anchor to grapple into the piece and hold you right on top of it with no swinging. When it was time to go you yanked it out or if it got hung up tied it off to a stern cleat and powered it out with the boat? I didn't realize you only used the one anchor as you guys discribed.

It seems like there is more then one way to skin a cat here. It appears that the safest way is to not achor off the stern and to use the wreck anchor off the bow. The whole point is to not get the main anchor hung up and hold to the piece. This may all be a mute point if the weather on the weekends do not improve.

depends on the size of you boat and grapple strength. A grapple (unless very large or strong) may not hold a large boat. Never anchor from anywhere other than bow.(you can get some strong currents even in the bay.
