Has anyone used these things? They look pretty cool and versatile.

Fly reel with attitude.

I have an Alvey for maney years. It casts like a spinner and retreives like a Fly reel.Not a bad drag either.Always turns a few heads when you rotate it 90 degrees after the cast!
