hey, I went to homer, ak this past summer and had a fabulous time. We stayed at Lands End Resort, which was a very nice place. For king salmon, the best time is june, for silvers, august, for halibut, may through september, and for lingcod, anytime after july 1 (the opening of the season). We went in August and caught a lot of silver salmon and halibut plus a couple of nice lingcod. The charters which I would recommend are 1) Daniel's Personalized guide Service and 2) sea flight sportfishing charters. There are websites for both of these and for the Land's End resort, but i do not have the websites on hand.
Hope this helps,

alaska is a big state

there are thousands of choices when it comes to fishing alaska.
each area of alaska offers different choices and times to fish.

you should think about the top 3 species of fish you want to target and then select your location based on that.

also to consider,
salmon fishing, do you want to troll or fish with spin/fly gear on a river bank.
what species of salmon do you want to catch the most.

halibut fishing, do you want to catch a lot of little fish (10-30 lbs) or do you want to fish for a few trophy size fish (100+ lbs)

depending on your priorities, i can make some suggestions for you.

Like to do one day kings, one day chicken halibut, one day barndoor, one day bottom whatever.

Codfisha- what was the ball park total expenditure on your trip?
Can I just fly in and grab a couple boats?

Yes you can get on a boat without reservations. I was there for 10 days 2 years ago and thats what I did. Stayed in Soldatna, Homer and Seward. Just make sure you have a motel reservation, rooms are limited. If you want a mixed bag Seward is your best bet.
