I am looking for a rod and reel for my daughter-- we generally go on the Brooklyn v1 out of Sheepshed bay bluefishing. I bought a Shakespear tiger 7' MH and a Penn 209M ( which I haven't used yet)-- Is this ok for her-- she is 22 years old- 5'4" and loves to fish-- I can keep this for myself and get her a different setup-- should I be looking for a better reel or a shorter rod--6'6"?-- Any suggestions?
This is for a birthday present so I can't bring her with me to try on.
I'm told I should use 30lb test with 25' flourocarbon leader-- the Reel is rated for 20lb test but I think it only means I would be able to spool less of the 30lb test.
Ps: I do not mind spending $200 or more if I am comfortable with the quality-- we only fish about 8 times a year--hoping to go more though
Thanks

It's great to hear other guys talking about their daughters and fishing. Last fall my oldest (23 now and 24 next month) got into it with me and my wife. She outfished me on a couple of occasions. Now my middle daughter is back home (21) and she says she wants to give it a go. She is a lot like me. The son I never had. Anyway, we bought a couple of diffrent rods / real combos last year for my oldest. The 1st one is Penn SV8000/PRS1225S90 Silverado Surf Combo 9'. Cost about $80. She caught a mess of fish with it last fall. The other is
Abu Garcia Bruiser reel on an Abu Garcia BRS82MH 8'rod. This also came as a combo. Got this one at Sports Authority for like $40 or $50. She is 5'10" and she handled both good by the end of the fall. Got to remember she only started in the fall around Labor Day. I bought a nice combo set up for my wife for Christmas.Shakespeare Ugly Stik BWS 11008C 2M and a Shakespeare Prius P4260 reel. This setup was around $80 and has not been tested yet but I read good things about it. Wife is 5'-2". This is her 2nd rig. Hope this helps.

I am a regular on the brooklyn vi. Depending on the time of year you will see a different rod and reels. Early in the year May or so we will be catching smaller blues and use lighter tackle. I use a graphite rod and a ambassaduer 6500 with 25lb test big game mono. I will also use a custom glass rod, with a calcutta 400. I also bring a heavy custom rod with a newell 220 with 30 lb mono. I dobule the line to prevent jig losses. This doesnt help you but gives you some idea as to what the regular use. Come to the boat on Fridays when there is always 15-20 regulars. Ask any of them and they will show what they use andmay even allow your daughter to try out the combos. The regulars will be on the pulpit during the jigging season. One warning is that these are fisherman and can cast the 2-4 oz jigs with ease and reel at a fast pace, and can handle any size fish they hook. Look me up I will be on the boat as soon as the blues show. Ask the mate philly or capt. robert for inor.
