Alright, so I've been invited to spend the next weekend on Water island. I only know that's it's part of Fire Island but am otherwise completely clueless about the spot. I'm definitely bringing all my fishing gear and would greatly appreciate and pointers. How productive is it there?

Thanks!

Surf Casting

I've spent a lot of time years ago at Water Island. This time of year there is hit or miss....Mostly was a miss for me, summer doldrums and all.

If you're bringing your Surf Stick, I'd suggest taking along some frozen bunker, Clams or eels with a sandspike and giving the bait a toss with a pyramid sinker and fishfinder rig into the dropoff. There are some very nice bars in the surf at W.I. and they can hold some nice Stripers/Blues. If you've got a second pole,,,,maybe use a Popping Plug or Tin while the other is soaking.

Either way it's an enjoyable way to spend a morning or evening with a couple cold ones and a pretty sunset...

Enjoy.

fishing water island

If you walk to the east about 3/4 of a mile you will find the remains of the wreck of the Glukouf. you can see a break on whats left of it about 100 yds. off the beach. It was a great spot to catch blackfish in the spring and fall and I've taken some nice bass in the area as well.
