Guys,

I'll be heading out to the Gut this weekend for the first time(been out once or twice before, but never with my own boat.) Does anyone have any advice or tips they can provide before I make this journey? Im looking for any help, anything from navigating out that way to fishing techniques......although I did get some tips on how to fish this spot from a friend,i'm wide open to anyone's input. Thanks guys.

Whats your Boat like?Where you coming from?
The gut can get pretty nasty at times. You will see the fleet out, there kind of follow their drift until you get the feel for the area.
If your goin for bass, bucktails w/ porkrind on a 3 way is one way. Let your sinker hit bottom & crank 3 times keep sinker close to bottom but not dragging on it.Swing on any bumps that you feel. You YOU WILL LOSE RIGS.

Yeah, it seems like bucktail and pork is the standard out that way.....who am I to change it?

I am coming from Mattituck (bay side). It should be a pretty clean run. I have a 24' Wellcraft W/A, I dont think she'll have any problems getting out........I hope

But I hear fishing those rips is not for the faint of heart

Not my own boat, but...

I'll be on a charter on the Fishy Business tomorrow evening. My first time bassing in Orient, also ( actually I'm not much of a bass guy in general). Good luck to you, be safe, wave if you see us!!!

Fish it a couple of times during the day and pay more attention to your boat handling than your fishing. When you get really comfortable during the day, then you can fish it at night.

Excellent advice, Mike...when I fish the Gut or the Race I generally just have my passengers fish and handle the deck...I don't leave the helm, especially at night. Between other boat traffic and sometimes hairy conditions, boat handling becomes extremely important.

The other thing I would suggest is...have a radar equipped boat if you will be fishing at night (and know how to use it!). The east end can fog in FAST & THICK, especially this time of year. The radar has definitely saved my @$$ several times out there.

Good luck.

I agree with Mike that you should fish it in the daytime first though tomorrow's forecast isnt too condusive to fishing the gut in a 24' boat especailly for your first time. wait until Sunday and go bright and early. Its still early enough in the seaosn to land some bass in the daylight. As for sinkers, you may want to have up to 20 oz as you will be nearing the new moon tides. Other than that, nothing wrong with fishing with the fleet for your first time to get a hang of it.

Good luck to you, hope you catch em real good! Yes, the weather stinks, but oh well, can't be sunny and light winds every day. Guess we just have to hope for the best!

Well, all I had to do was look at the final forecast this morning, then wait for the call from my friend who put the trip together .
Did you guys go?

I fished the gut in the late 70's . Was some of the most memorable big bass fishing of my life. It was the same back then.... three way, 8 - 16 oz lead 12" to 3 way and a 3 to 4 foot leader to the bucktail. 50# test and locked up drags. Drift up the slope, feel a tap set the hook for all your worth....no fish, 3 to 5 cranks up and do it again. A good night was 300 to 400 pounds. A great nite pushed past 600 pounds. Fished with the likes of Bill (packy) Collins, Mike (puppy dog) Macherelli, Fast Freddy. It was the days when Nick Karas was painting Joey Angivine out to be a bass killing hero. I could go on and on ..... Haven't been out there since 1982.

I fish the Gut in a 20CC. Best to get there at the beginning of a tide to get a feel for the drift and boat traffic. When things get too hairy for you just move to the North side of Plum Island and toss plugs into the rocky shoreline. It's relaxing and can be productive.

Certainly don't make your first trip a night outing.

Yeah we went.
A little tough getting out in the beginning but it really wasn't too bad. We had a 30-45 min cruise from one location to another, as it started to rain and hail for the ride. But when we got to the gut the clouds disappeared and stars were out. It was tough making the turn after the drift though.
