Thanks to you guys/(girls?), I'm now done with my first surf combo. I was on a budget and I think it worked out well. I ended up with a 9' sealine-x and a 5500ss w/extra spool for $75.00 - both used.

I do most of my fishing around manhattan (70%). This was supposed to be my first rod to get me introduced to surf fishing. It was perfect for my application. I can throw a 3 w/no prob and trying to improve throwing 4oz. Now I need to start planning my second rod and reel.

This second setup will be for true surf apps outside of manhattan. I'm still on a budget and am willing to buy used gear. target cost: <$130

Rod: I think I can plug with my current gear (or no?) which makes me lean towards a slightly bigger rod like 10' for throwing bigger bait.
Reels: I know about the 704 following, any other choices though? I like better reels with decent rods rather than sh*tty reels with great rods.

The 9 footer will be a little light for some conditions along the South Shore, if that's where you'll be fishing. If you are happy with the Sealine X rod you have, I suggest considering the same rod in an 11 foot Medium/Heavy action.

I have two that I use for throwing bucktails at small as one ounce, and plugs up to 4 ounces and it works very well (a little heavy for those light bucks though). It also has enough backbone for throwing bait. One has a 704, the other has a Slammer 560. The 560 has plenty of guts for this rod, even though it may look a little small to many.

Anyway, the answer to your question re: s. shore is YES. But I also need it for SI and Bkln. I'll be lurking to see what others have to say on other surfcasting sites.

704 reel

the 704 is not a sh...y reel as you put it. it is one of the best i have been using for over 30 years bail removed of course and drilled roter andworkes perfly in heavy surf and on nortyh shore and a lot less $ than a VS

I wasn't saying the 704 shi**y. In fact, I was just saying it was so good that it is a "standard" for many. It just came out wrong on the computer.
