So:rolleyes: trying to decide on a new reel, looking to spend a few bucks and get something nice. question is........ between Accurate and Avet........ Whats the difference:confused: are the Accurates worth the extra money? and does anyone have anything negative to say about either brand.

Good question that regularly surfaces on our sister board www.allcoast.com.

Here's one recent discussion; which though somewhat tangental to your question does address it in a few of the many posts:

Allcoast Thread

And here's a three page thread that's spot on:

AVET vrs Accurate Comparison Thread

Personally, for what I do on the inshore scene, I feel the Accurate reels do not offer enough significant upside over the newer AVET products to justify the much higher price.

Were I a tuna fisher, maybe then I'd look harder at Accurate's offering. Though truth be known, after a full two seasons of fishing the excellent MXJ reels, I'm not sure what more the Accurate products can bring to the table. The AVET reels are very, very nice - especially in view of their pricing.

best, Lep

I have a 6.5' seeker east coast series, (30)#

I use the rod for Blackfish and stripers mostly.

I am also having a hard time deciding on what size(LX or MX) and whether to get a two speed reel or not........ I'm very indecisive

I know I want a high speed retrieve, like a 6:1, but does that make it a struggle to pull in a cow or big ars black? would 2 speed help or would it be a waste of money as a feature I would never use:confused:

Part of the dilemma is whether I should expect this setup to be conducive to deep water wreck fishing like offshore cod, and tile / light tackle tuna etc.

Or....... should I expect this setup to be for blacks and stripers and get another in the future for the offshore species.

As for size........ the LX looks better, the MX seems a little small but tolerable and if I am not expecting to use it as a deep water rod as well then I don't think I need more then the MX.

And then there's the initial Accurate vs. Avet question

So......... looking for Opinions here, What do you use and what do you think would fit my purpose best? Don't hold Back!

In the meantime....... I'm gonna read Leps links

Thanks for the help guys:)

For what your looking to do rule out the accurate to much reel & money..

The avet LX makes a nice codfish reel ...The Avet sx the little one..Now thats a great reel..I use it for Blackfish all the time & have never met one it can reel in..I have landed fish in the 10lb range with no problems...As far as striper fishing some guys use the two speed for tuna...I dont think you need the two speed...

The MX also a nice reel I think its more reel than you need but some guys like having some extra [email protected]!!s...I use the MX for giant grouper fishing ( Jewfish ) landed over a dozen to 90lb's with that reel in one day...Its has plenty of drag................

Good luck I hope I helped

Avet is raising there prices 10% so if you want one buy now... I recommend Trophy Tackle......

Accurate awesome reels but you dont need it for what you want to do.

2 SPEEDS VERY NICE OPTION I like mine on the sx but you dont need it.

If your going to deep water cod fish in the gulf of maine and light duty tuna fish you may want the LX.

For every thing else you want to do the MXL is fine and would be ok for codfish in 200' if using braid.

Keep in mind everything is a give or take, you can only do so much with one reel.

Now I have to solve my own dilema of wich reel to use on my wahoo JR.Lol

Capt.Richi is rite Trophy tackle has awesome prices and great service.

Avet's basically rock, especially for the money.

The drag is the best, they are very well built ( I have taken it apart, very high quality yet simple). The only thing I don't like is this "binding" issue which they have not fully addressed. The tighter the drag, the more friction (binding) you feel in the reel handle when cranking. It is not terrible, but not as smooth as some other contemporary offerings.

I own an MXL 4.6 which I have caught numerous large (pool winning) COD and Bass on. It is a great little reel.

I recently purchased a JX 4.6. This is a little more refined finish wise, I can't wait to try and beat the pants off it, maybe jigging tuna, or deep wreck / cod fishing.

I have not fished an Accurate, so I can't comment. Once you get into Avet though it's easy to get hooked, fine piece of gear at a resonable price.

MXL

So far I own the avet SX, MXL, and EX30wide. I am hooked. You dont need the two speed for the type of fishing you're describing.
If its between the LX and the MXL....The LX is way too overkill...better suited to jigging tuna in the canyon than pulling the head off a blackfish. The MXL is my favorite inshore reel. It makes a great utility reel as there is pretty much nothing you cant use it for.

The MXL would be a great choice for that rod as well.

I owned an Accurate 665h. Yeah, its supposed to be the Ferrari of reels....really refined, super pricey and prestigious bla bla bla...

I just sold it. I Would NEVER think of selling one of my Avets.

OH...PS...Grab one now since they are raising there price 10%...I also am trying to pick up two more avets i've been wanting befor the increase occurs. 10% is a little steep of an increase if you ask me. LOVE their products....but prob. wont be buying any more unless it's on Flea bay or something.

I have an Accurate B270 that I use strictly for chunking on the NS. Have used it hard for several seasons with not a single problem. Is it worth the extra coin over a similar sized Avet? Probably not, but it is a nice piece of equipment.

Thanks for all the help guys:)
It made for an easy decision. You just cured 2 weeks of torment and indecision in about 24 hrs.

Avet MXL it is
The Accurates do look and feel great but I think your all right, It's kind of like renting a Back hoe to plant a flower......... When I get a little more into the offshore seen I'll go for the larger 2 speed reels and then maybe I'll think about the Accurates.

Now I need to decide what color
:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:.........

Togilator - None of my large lever drags bind with increased drag, don't see any reason why smaller reels need to. Maybe it has something to do with full drag yet free spool, I don't know.

Until they find a way to eliminate this phenomenon, the blemish can't be overlooked, especially for bottom fishing. Still, as I said, a very fine product overall, IMO.

I see you from Bayshore so stop in atTrophy Tackle their the best..

I'm in the process of planning some inshore custom rod for them..I thinking of building some GUSA composite...I started fishing them this year ..I feel there the best thing out there..
I also going to build some Calstar's GX7 Gf700L & M & maybe a H for the tuna guys..

I have a blue MXJ on a Seeker BA-85 and it looks good. Great for clamming bass and the occassional chopper that slams the bait.

As far as the price increase goes I buy a lot of machined parts and they have all gone up significantly. The price of aluminum is stupid and it costs a lot more to run a shop thanks to the speculators.

I think your decision is right, I have 3 Accurates from the 197xc all the way up to the 870, and 2 Avets, the SX and the MX. While I absolutely love the Accurates you cant find a better lever drag reel for the price that Avet sells theirs for.

Its normal for lever drags to be harder to crank when you increse drag pressure. It happens with all of them.

No it doesn't and on a well made reel it shouldn't. Ask Tunatoys in the Reel repair section, he designs reels and can explain it much better than I can.
