I copied this (see below)from the Abu Website. The 6500TSCT come with 4 bearings from the factory, I added one more to make 5. And it really is one of the smoothest reels that I have ever seen.
I have the entire cleaning process down to about 30 minutes, the are easy to work on. I wouldn't want to bother you with looking at my reel with all that you are going through, I'll try to replace the plastic gear on the far side of the spool to se if that helps.
The reel is smooth, but not when you match it up with my 6500.
