I just repainted my hull. I used west marine CPP Plus. In the flier it says single season use. I thought that ablative paint automaticaly meant multiple season. I used ablative because I dont want to paint every year. Any comments about this paint.

It depends on where you dock and how much you use the boat. I was under the impression that an ablative paint was ment to come off during the season so you do not have a build up of layers. I do two coats of ablative paint every spring and it comes out fairly clean in the fall. However, I have a lot of growth where I dock.

The idea behind abblative paint is that it's designed to come off the hull with any thin layer of build up you might have..each time you move the boat through water you are cleaning the hull...

Now, when you pull her out of the water in the fall clean the bottom and look for spots that seem to be wearing off. Those are the spots you will need to hit next year ..Spot-Paint it...Prior to me Soda Blasting the hull..(ANOTHER POST) I've used nothing but Abblative paint. As a matter of fact I've been using the same gallon of paint for three seasons...

Abblative paint is designed to come off so there is no build up of paint year after year...

As long as the existing paint hasn't worn away there is no need to repaint. A lot of folks put on a first coat that is a different color than the second coat to make it easier to see where the paint has worn away.

How big is your boat?
2 gallons is ALOT of paint. 1 gallon goes a good ways.
I know it's not fair to compare, but an average gallon of paint, for say sheetrock or other smooth surfaces, covers approx 400SF. Even if you go 1/2 that distance, 1 gallon should cover a bottom without having to thin it.

I've been using the same paint for a few years now, the CPP PLUS, on the advice of Capt Brad, with great results.

However, I am a former House Painter and get a bit carried away when I paint my bottom. Every year I say I'm gonn go under the boat and just sand out the bad spots and touch up only those areas. Well, 2-3 hrs of sanding later I come out from underneath looking like Alice Cooper. Then I lay on a nice new liberally thick coat on the whole bottom, un-thinned, and use about a 1/2 gallon on a 21' boat that already has a nice base on it.

Ablative

I used ablative last time I painted. After painting this time, I notices in the west marine circular it said single season. It threw me of when I saw that. If I knew it was single season at the time I would have used a better paint.

Used CPP for a few years with no problems except some slime. Always a multi-season ablative. Purchased a gallon 2 weeks ago and for some reason I actually decided to read the West Marine description and saw that it is no longer considered a multi-season paint. Called West Marine and was informed that they changed sources for the CPP paint.
They actually told me that if you have to pull the boat for more than 3 days it will lose it's effectiveness. Don't know how true it is but never-the-less I returned the can of paint. They do make a PCA Gold paint that they consider multi-season and priced like Micron.
Bought a gallon of BoatersWorld ablative multi-season for $$99.00 today. 56% copper.

Very Interesting, I never would have thought to look. Maybe if Brad sees this he can confirm that they changed the formulation and its now only a one season paint.

That is odd...
Luckily this year I worked out of the gallon that I started last year.

Yeah, I still have about 1/2 gallon from last year as well. But I'm not sure it will be enough to do the job.

After reading this post I am going to spot paint. Every year I sand the whole bottom and paint. There are a few layers of paint on the hull and I dont think it needs it. I was under the impression though that the ablative paint loses its effectiveness when out of the water for prolonged periods of time.

Have those of you that spot painted with the ablative noticed a significant rise in growth on your hull?

This will also help me for next year because I intend to sand down to the primer and start fresh. This would be one layer of paint less to sand off.
