Yesturday a 23' Regulator got hit by a wave fishing on the Bonita Bar SouthEast of Nantucket and managed to dump its two crewmen who swam to shore safely. The boat however was stuck in gear going about 4-5 knots and heading SE into the Atlantic. The boat hasn't been found yet that I know of, anyone found or heard of an abonded reg out there?

WTOWNFLYFISHER - 8/27/2008 11:58 AM From the Inquirer and Mirror 8-27-08 Two men go overboard off Smith's Point By Jason Graziadei I&M Senior Writer Heavy seas tossed two men out of their 26-foot fishing boat just before dark on Monday south of Smith's Point, but both came ashore on Esther's Island and were ferried back to Hither Creek by the Marine Department. Assistant harbormaster Sheila Lucey, along with Chris Vanderwolk and Ken Lappin, launched the Marine Department's Madaket rescue boat and picked up the two men, who were both wearing life jackets, on Esther's Island. Their 26-foot boat was last seen drifting southeast, and may or may not come back ashore, harbormaster Dave Fronzuto said. Both men declined medical treatment once they were returned to shore, but one later went to the hospital for water ingestion. "It was a situation where this could have turned out a heck of a lot different," Fronzuto said. "They were extremely lucky."

im sure they would have been able to get back out there or manage to organize something if it was on a drift, usually a good amount of traffic around there...heard they were pulling up an anchor when it happened so the boat was in a low gear...could be wrong, but came from good sources....

Salvage is a Tricky thing.... Roughly, its a finders keepers... Because the "Master of the vessel" abandoned it, it now belongs to the underwriters of the boat ( insurance company ). The ins. company is the one to deal with in regards to the salvage, and from there, it gets negotiated. Larger boats do a Lloyd's Open form ( No Save, no Pay) but I'm not sure about smaller boats.. It's a small salvage job, so not too many companies are going to take that one.... Hey, someone may get a nice parting gift out of it.

Target practice

My Nephew who is in the Marines told me that they find all sorts of stuff floating around out there. Sinking a Cargo container make for some interesting target fodder.....but boy oh boy a running Regulator now thats some fun. I guess that will beat an 55 gallon drum any day! HooRah!

absolutely, its like finding 300,000...you would find it, drive it back to the marine, stare at it, think about all the trips you would have (without flipping it).....all the while knowing your giving it back....
