I joined DCVER out east after delivering a FnD along the way. HE had a flat that he was told had fish on it so off we went. I brought both spin and fly gear as the wind was up and I like to catch fish and often one method is superior. DCVER has 2 yaks but this was his first salt experience. So we paddled to the area we wanted to hit. I left DCVER on the flat and went exploring with the yak. I ended up heading up a creek and looking for bait. I found spearing and shrimp. It was near dead low and on the outgoing there was a great spot for gamefish to eat the bait that would be flushed but that was going to be in several hours and not now. So back to where DCVER was. He had waded app. 100yards out on the flat so I paddled out to him. He had lost one striper and had a big one swim near him. So I hopped off my yak and started casting with a spin outfit. I got an immediate hit which turned out to be a sea robin. It had a bunch of friends so I decided to hop on the yak and hit a flat across the channel that looked good. It was completely surrounded by deeper water. Before I went I directed DCVER back to shallower water as he was going back the wrong way. When I fish flats I either anchor my kayak nearby or tether it to me. That way you have it. You could be so busy fishing that the rising tide could trap you.
So to the other flat I went while DCVER took the long hike back to his yak. I had almost an immediate hit and lost about a 25" striper. Before DCVER joined me I caugth 3 stripers up to app. 25". Then he joined me and all I got were hits. The fish were in less than knee deep water so all they could do was run and they did. Its was great sport. I was uisng a 3" Storm Wildeye, which is quickly becoming one of my favortie lures as I've been catching stripers, smallies, largemouths, crappie, yellow perch and a sea robin on it. The one I used was the shiner pattern. I would blind cast and start reeling before it hit the water so I would snag the vegetation in the shallow water. Hits were very solid as I reeled at high speed. Since things slowed down at this area of the flat we hopped on the yaks and paddled to the other side. I threw a cast towards the channel and had an immediate hook up and a great fight on my light spin gear from this fish.
