My kids are at the age 8 and 10 Dad doesn't know anything about anything, baseball, fishing etc. They want to know what hand they should reel with on a spinnig reel, conventional reel(They are right handed)and what hand should be on the rod fighting the fish.

They want to hear it from the experts

Thanks

The "strong" hand holds the pole and fights the fish.

With conventional, usually BOTH hands hold the rod, so the "strong" hand cranks, for speed.

But in Freshwater, and among light-tackle fans, some of the very best buy "left-handed" Baitcasting reels, so they can hold their ONE HANDED pole in their "strong" hand".

Spinning gear was intended for the "strong hand" on the pole, and the "weak hand" cranking.

But whatever you do, PLEASE, keep your spinning reel hanging underneath the pole?

Hi,

Most spining reels today can have the crank mounted on either side.

I say leave it up to the boyz and mount the handle on the side they feel most comfortable using. Let them try both ways.

MakoMatt says that what the other Pros here have told yous guys is correct, but I would like to add one more thing. I happen to know that your dad is a very good fisherman himself, one of the best around these parts from what I hear, I would call him a Pro too, and yous guys should listen to everything he tells you. I have caught many man eating sharks, but let me tell yous guys I could still learn a thing or 2 from your dad, so if you want to be good fisherman, pay attention to him and don't waste the Pros time, although if you have any more questions, please, feel free to axe.

I would love to stay and chit-chat with yous guys, but I have to out to the garage and boil the meat off the jaws of some man eaters I caught last week, so if yous guys have any more questions, just axe.
