I read a story in newsday today, a guy got stopped by the Suffolk police because he was carrying a rifle down the street and they didn't arrest him. The cops said they couldn't arrest him because he wasn't menacing anyone. Why would someone carry a rifle in public ?

In all my years on LI, I've only seen one firearm in plain view. Some duck hunter was coming home from the bay on his bike and he had his shotgun tied across his handle bars and a string of ducks hanging in the back. It was a very strange sight to see in Nassau county. You'd think nothing of it upstate, but down here its different .
This isn't an anti gun rant. I collect guns and hunt . But its strange to see someone walking down the street with a rifle in his hand and nothing is done about it.

I don't believe it is illegal to carry gun in public so why should someone arrest him?

Question him - of course - to make sure he's not actually ready to go on a shooting rampage - but arrest him?

I don't really think it's illegal to carry a gun in public.

I'm pretty sure he could have it loaded too. The ECL prohibits having a loaded long gun in a automobile. Not in a boat. And not in the field, and not walking down the street. Doesn't mean it's a smart thing to do. Can't discharge it within 500' of a dwelling though.

When I was too young to drive, about 15 years ago, I used to ride my bike from Holbrook over to Bayport with my bow strapped across my handlebars, to see John Moore at Highplains Archery. Occasionally I got a few strange looks, but most people just didn't know. Was there any reason given for why this guy was walking around with the gun? Just bought it? Going/ooming from the range?

When I was a kid we used to carry our rifles back and forth to school at the beginning and end of the school year on the subway! O.K. they were cased, but everyone knew what was inside the case and no one ever said a word.

We used to keep and use our guns inside the school! The rifle range was inside the school in th basement!

Our rifle range was in the school basement. I brought my 22 to the school range and sighted it in !
Newsday use to report the school rifle scores. It was neat seeing my name in the paper . Rifle teams are a thing of the past on LI. The liberals got their way.

all 4 of these statements should be followed by "no, except in nyc". a nyc gun shop will not allow you to even touch a rifle/shotgun/or ammo without a valid license.

May have lost it on the cut and paste. You are right.
