Plenty of streams up in Westchester/Putnam. Some even have native strain fish in them
. Most are within an hours drive from the city. Don't think that you can find anything much closer.
could you be more specific please? I have never fished here before, I reallly need a specific place to start, and I can learn more from there

O.K. Lets get more specific.

If you take a look at a map you will see Route #100 in Katonah
(which can be reached either by the Tachonic or #684). If you follow Route 100 North you will run into route #202. Along this route which eventually joins #684 there are a number of very well known trout streams. You have the river that flows from Croton Falls (catch and release only),but holds "native" fish over 10 lbs. Continue to follow 202 north and you will come across another trophy trout stream. This one flows from Sodom Reservior (artificials only) but you are allowed to keep 3 (i think) over 14". Also in between these trophy trout streams there are numerous smaller streams that hold holdover, stocked, and some wild trout as well. That should be plenty to get you started.

NotCommon- Sorry I'm slow to respond. To be honest, I haven't fished it and I suppose it's more like a large steam than a river. Its name is Ramapo River though. I know they stock it. I also believe sections are open year round (no season, but check me on that). I've seen guys working it just over the boarder in Jersey. From everything I've read it looks like it produces. I reccomended because you wanted close to the city.

I was up in Roscoe (aka; Trout Town USA) the other weekend and met a couple guys from NYC that had a house there. Apparently there's a bus that goes up there. Might want to check that out. That's how they get up and back every weekend.
