I assume you want a casting set up. I have a Tsunami Five Star rod that is about 7'. I forget what reel I put on it but it isn't an expensive one, you want something that says medium weight. Go to Dick's Sporting Goods they should have something. Or J&H in Oakdale since they are moving and looking to sell off a lot of stock before the move. Actually that is where I bought my rod. You can probably get a good deal there. For tossing stuff off a dock you can get away with like 12# mono line. As John from Terminal Tackle once told me if you set your drag right you can catch cow bass on 8# test. Lighter pound line spools off the reel better. Any decent monofilament line will do. With a set up like that you can catch anything from snappers to schoolies to decent size choppers.

Last September I was tossing diamond jigs at a peanut blitz and hooked into a decent sized blue. I'm guessing about 7 pounds or so based on how long he looked when I got him near the boat. Well the air touched his dorsal and he made another dive down right at my prop. The sharp edge cut my braided line and off he went. I probably could have set my drag just a bit tighter and it would not have peeled off so much so fast but the rod and reel handled the fight no problem.
