I would like to clear something up:mad:;)...

My entire life about this time of the year into early fall I have had to hear guys start talking about a particular fish. Everywhere in the world this fish is called "BonitO". But as this species of tunas swims off the New York/Long Island area it is referred to as "BonitA".:)

This is not slamming any Brooklyn/N.Y. accents as I have one myself
But can someone please prove me wrong...?? Because I notice that people even type the word "bonitA... To my knowledge there is only bonito.

I always referred to it as a Coney Island Jellyfish...

And years later, when I saw one "in the wild," the name was even more approriate.

One morning at first light I was surfcasting in PJ Harbor and out of the corner of my eye, I saw a pulsating "jellyfish" swinging down current to my position. Once it got right in front of me, and the light had improved, I realized that this pulsating mass was not from the Phylum Cnidaria (Jellyfish), but from Phylum Trojanaria

Nearly bust my gut laughing...

Maybe the Long Island Italians were right after all..;)

..and that bonita is a better name for the fish. Bonita is Spanish for "pretty". And a live bonito sure is pretty. Emerald green, a silvery belly, large eyes, and tiger stripes..looks like nature couldn't make up her mind whether to make a mackerel or tuna so it has the body of a tuna and the head of a mackerel.

It is interesting how society changes the names of certain things and people don't question the new word because it is so widely used.

Cool fish and his cousin the skipjack that has saved many a day offshore. Fat alberts I don't like...unless you like an excellent fall shark bait or a trolling strip for your lures:)
