I'm loolking to get a new jigging rod for use on Stelwaggen and east of Chatham on a private boat. It'll be used for cod jigging 75% of the time, and the rest of the time for tuna. I still mostly use Norwegian jigs for cod, but have been experimenting with lighter 'butterfly' jigs when I can hold bottom with them.
It used to be cod rods were ~7' broomsticks, but now they seem to have gotten softer and shorter. I looked at some Trevalas but am puzzled by their <6' length. This board seems to agree that long rods are not necesasary for jigging, but I also see a fair bit of talk of Calstar 700H and XH blanks used for jigging.
So, what kind of a rod do I really want? I don't have the opportunity to try them on the water and would like to get one this fall. It'll be used with an Accurate 665. Thanks in advance.

If you like to use jigging rods for cod and tuna, Japanese style short rods are not desirable. Carlstar 700H or 700XH is good for tuna jigging, but the rod is not favored by cod fishermen though you can use it for cod jigging with not much problem.
Rod choice is like car choice. Everybody has different preference and taste. However the general trend is to get lighter. 8'6" GLoomis rods are favored for cod/tuna jigging by many. Mike of Peace Token landed a 77" bluefin with the rod off Provincetown, Cape Cod this year. Some like jigging rod cut from Calstar 900H or Seeker blanks.
A 7'6" custom from St Croix 4M76XHF becomes my favorite for cod and tuna jigging recently because unbelievable light weight and 80 lb rating. I am going to try the rod for 150 lbs range tuna on the Stellwagen Bank this week.

However I strongly suggest to try Japanese style short jigging rods for tuna jigging. Some really like short rods and they wouldn't want ot go back to long rods for tuna jigging once they taste the joy of jigging and fighting with such short, light rods.
