Since I had no luck with my pocket cruiser question, I thought I would rephrase it. Does anyone know of any 9'6" beam DE hulls in the 29 to 35 foot range? I know that's a bit narrow, but I hope one of the DE enthusiasts here has some input for me.

LEAN & MEAN!!

The rule of thumb on any of the original Downeasters was that beam shall not exceed one third of the total boats length. Use this formula to select your choice. The one that leaps of the page is the Dyer 29. Keep in mind that this does not include rub railing and the likes, therefore a little extra on the spec should put you in the ball park. On my JC 31 the actual length is 32.4 and the beam is 11.5 if you less the rub railing you are right at the formula of one third. Forter is another fine vessel that would fit you beam spec along with I believe the 28 BHM or Seaway.

The old 30foot REPCO had a 9' 6" beam.

I was scared someone would say that. ;)

I only need a top end of about 20-some kts with a 15-17kt cruise, really, an old fashioned easily driven hull is what I am looking for. The problem is that to make a good cruiser for 2+ week trips I need about 29 to 30 feet, and just to make things harder I would want outboard power. This boat will be just too small to fill the ****pit with an engine box, I also suspect that a pair of outboards will be quieter at cruise, at least from the inside helm and I am not planning on an outside steering station anyway. I also like the redundancy of twins too.

This will be a boat for remote exploring and will be away from the marina for weeks at a time. Thus I need sufficient freezer and fridge space as well as a shower. Fuel and water can be found w/o too much trouble in SE Alaska, but there ain't too many laundromats or grocery stores up there. All this means a 25 foot hull just won't work AFAIK.

Not sure where you got 9'6" for trailering.
8'6" is the max legal width on any roadway in the US and Canada.
several states N.J. being one permit the purchase of a (Special Trailer Tag) which allows a max width of 10'. it was implimented for the transport of any one item only during daylite hours til noon on sat.Sudays and holiday prohibited. any where else a daily trip permit is required, Get caught w/illegal oversize load risks vehicle impoundment and fines in the thousands.

I plan to use the permit system to move the boat from region to region. I would not be hauling this boat out every weekend, but would launch it for several months at a time. I just want to avoid the need for an escort car when relocating. I think I am going to have to retain a NA and build my own.

We like the Rosbrough, but it's too small to consider living aboard for weeks at a time. I am thinking of a boat an order of magnitude larger, about 36 feet and outboard powered to get machinery out of living spaces. We want to cruise at hull speed and a bit more say 9 kts with a fast cruise of under 20 kts. range of 400 miles at fast cruise with stowage for food etc for up to 2 weeks self contained travel. Maximum weight of the boat with no fuel or water or perishables of 10,000lbs to allow towing with a 4x4 F350.

Albin

Have you looked at an Albin 25-27' ? Not really a DE boat but I've seen a couple of them crusing for the summer out in the San Juans. I've thought about buying one and leaving it out there and just use it in the summer .Plus they are cheap and some come with a trailer. Looks like some good deals on Yachtworld. Also the owners have a good website.
