Actress Marion Cotillard sparked a political row yesterday after accusing America of fabricating the 9/11 attacks.

The 32-year-old French actress, who received an Oscar last month for her performance as singer Edith Piaf in La Vie En Rose, openly questioned the truth behind the terrorist atrocity in an interview broadcast on a French website.

"I think we're lied to about a number of things," Cotillard said, singling out the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center as an example of the US making up horror stories for political ends.

Referring to the two passenger jets being flown into the Twin Towers, Cotillard said:

"We see other towers of the same kind being hit by planes. Are they burned? They [sic] was a tower, I believe it was in Spain, which burnt for 24 hours. It never collapsed. None of these towers collapsed. And there [in New York], in a few minutes, the whole thing collapsed."

She added that the towers, planned in the early Sixties, were an outdated "money-sucker" that would have cost more to modernise than to rebuild altogether, which is why they were destroyed.

She said: "It was a money-sucker because they were finished, it seems to me, by 1973, and to re-cable all that, to bring up-to-date all the technology and everything, it was a lot more expensive, that work, than destroying them."

Cotillard's stardom and increased earning power looked assured following her Oscar win.

But after her outburst, in which she also queried the 1969 Moon landings, a successful future in Hollywood appears to be in jeopardy.

She said: "Did a man really walk on the Moon? I saw plenty of documentaries on it, and I really wondered. And in any case I don't believe all they tell me, that's for sure."

Cotillard, who was born and brought up in Paris, made the comments on Paris Première - Paris Dernière, a programme broadcast a year ago.

Cut her some slack, she can't help it if she's French and comes from a country that has zero claim to fame in the past 400 years.

Place has turned into a third rate sh*t hole. Can't wait for La Tower de Eiffel to get planed, bet that won't burn either.

Just so you know, if it weren't for the French we would all be bowing to the Queen. If the French Navy, numerous military personell and their money did not get involved in the Revolutionary War then this wouldn't be the great nation we have today. I believe I can overlook the whole German thing because this nation does exist due to the French. They were also instrumental in bringing down the British Empire that was pretty much trying to take over everything that moved from the 16th - 19th centuries

I am not defending what one moron has to say. Just conveying some facts.

I have been to France and it really is quite amazing. The people were great, the architecture and the history are all incredible.

You are right about one thing, the Eiffel Tower won't burn as it is nothing but steel.

This is why actors should repeat the lines that were written for them and little else.

tell that to Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, Rosie O'Donnell, Jeanine Garafalo, Susan Sarandon, and the rest of the big mouth actors out there that use their celebrity to further their own agenda's.

You got it right Frankie.

Comments by that actress are so stupid its ridiculous and if you want to dislike a whole country, thats your business, but the fact is that the French were right up in the front lines in Afghanistan as a major contributor to the NATO force.

Several years ago I went to an Anesthesia conference in Paris and took a side trip to the Normany beaches. The cemetary at Coolerville or some thing like that was profoundly moving. I was also taken in for dinner in Caen by a man who spoke almost no English and my French was rudimentary at best. He was genuinly appreciative and probably reflects more of the population then we think. Just consider that a few years ago the elected a new President who ran on a pro U.S platform. I love Edith Piaf's music and saw the movie, but this little **** actress can stuff it. Ed

The Normandy area of France is VERY pro-american. They are reminded of our sacrifices for them by the headstones left behind.

As for the rest of France, they love us as much as the left in this country does. And we know how much that is.

It certainly sounds like you have never been to France, Scott. If you have, did you happen to open your eyes at all? I met not one anti-american from France. I did meet a few from England and a German couple but no French. Actually one of my cab drivers was pro Bush for some reason and he was a Muslim.

Scott, you may also want to change your signature. Obviously you don't do your homework. If you knew anything about Thomas Jefferson then you would know that upon the retirement of Benjamin Franklin, Jefferson was the United States Minister to France. He was actually a staunch supporter of the French Revolution and put his own life at risk for the cause.

Oh yeah, I am one of those "left "you speak of. I am extremely patriotic and love my country. I can't stand the direction this regime has taken us but I will do anything for my "land of liberty".
