I was reading an article that they are farm raising Atlantic halibut for possible restocking of the ocean
The Halibut in our area were bigger than the Pacific strain
At one time they were caught and treated as a garbage
Than they caught on as a food fish and almost fished into extinction
I've caught small ones years ago on the first Georges bank trips.
Do you think they will make a come back
And we might some day be getting barn doors in our own back yards.
They once ranged all the way south to NJ.

Hali But

Sam, from your mouth to G-ds ear. That would be the greatest to have a Halibut fishery on the east coast. My dream is to go to Alaska for the "Barn Doors"-Hopefully something is possible on the east coast BUT I think I'll get to Alaska way before that happens

Just Not So...

The halibut on the Helen-H was the ONLY one that was ever caught on the boat according to Joe Huck and his wife. They do still catch Halibut in the winter up in the Gulf of Maine, usually only on set lines using alewives for bait.

Platts and Northern Jeffries produced a number of small halibut the last couple of years in the spring. If the closures stay in place there is always a chance.
It would be a dream come true to catch a legal halibut on the east coast.
