I'm finally buying my own equipment.
Florida Party boat bottom fishing
2 to 4 day trips
Gulf middle grounds and keys
(mainly viking and yankee capt)
30-40 50# conventional setups

I'm trying to decide if its worth the pain in the arse factor to go with 8 foot rods over 7 foot.
Ive always used the boats gear so my experience is limited.

I want to go with 8 foot but:
I live in Minnesota so the airlines and car rental are the big considerations.
8 foot rod selections seem to limit my choices to Crowder (not that there is anything wrong with that)

Your thoughts or Real Life experiences?

Cheers

Hi Billy I have fished similar trips out of Key west..
You right about the airlines No 8' rods..Even 7' these day are hard to fly without an extra charge..
I fished a Calstar 700Ml & M both were great..I also fished a st croix 15-30 cork grip musky rod for yellowtail snapper..
The calstar's will handle most any fish your going to catch..I used a trinidad 20 & 30 and a calcutta 400 on the st croix..

Good luck & catch em up..

You could try 8' 2 piece rods.

Ive used 2 piece rods freshwater lightweight jigging before.
Feel is much better on a 1 piece.

Very few High Quality rods available in 2 piece also.
I'm going top of the line factory built.

Id like to get all the same make rods for consistency's sake.
When your on the third day of minimal sleep the more things feel the same the easier it is to function.
----------------------
8 foot I'm thinking:
30# Calstar GFGR800M - 8 foot - 20-40 lb
40# Crowder LB80 - 8 foot - 30-60 lb
50# Crowder LB80H - 8 foot - 30-80 lb
(The Crowders are Calstar GF Blanks)
----------------------
If I were to go 7 foot
30# Calstar GFGR700ML 20-40
40# Calstar GFGR700M 20-50
50# Calstar GFGR700MH 30-60
----------------------

Ive already bought Accurate 2 speeds
870, 665W and B2-30
I know they are too good for what I'm doing but I'm old and life is short and I'm single.

Let's think a little outside the box.

Hi,

Your concern is shared by many. You need a fishing rod. As builders we need blanks and also have to ship finished rods. So we have shipping problems also and it is getting more difficult all the time.

I would suggest this to you. Choose the blanks you will fish. Design the rods as you would a stand up rod, 2 pieces. Cut the blank butt for the determined length. Now you can use a slick butt, an aluminun butt or a wood butt like in the old days. You know a retro butt! You will have a very strong rod. All these will work and you shipping is resolved with maybe a 5' long tube.

Interesting concept. Id lose the blank thru butt.
Would the reel seat be part of the rod and then the butt be separate?
Ive only seen 130# rods where the butt comes off.
Sounds like it would be expensive to have strong positive threading with a pretty fair overlap at the attachment point. I don't know anything about rod building but it sounds like a great idea that would require a little R&D.
I'm gonna run this by some other people and get back to you.

2 pc rod

Hi Billy,

Years ago 2 peice rods were almost the norm. Wooden butts were used wit a metal reel seat attached to the butt. A matching ferrule came with the reel seat and the blank was installed into the ferrule and you had a 2 pc rod.

Whatever blank you decide upon, decide how long a butt you want then cut the blank at that point. You can use the butt end of the blank as the center of your butt. You can chose cork, eva, or a slick butt for the butt grip. Order a reel seat that is designed for 2 piece rods, the ferrule (attached to the top part of the blank) unscrews from the reel seat for shipping. You will have a strong rod.

Another option is to cut the blank and install the top portion into an Aftco Uni-butt. This method is a bit costly but strong as strong can be.
