I was fishing Wednesday in the Sloop Channel just west of the 3rd Meadowbrook Bridge. At about noon my weather alert went off on the VHF. It said a strong thunder storm with possibility of waterspouts was a few miles west of the Great South Bay. That is not far from were I was fishing. There were a few dark clouds to the east, but nothing that looked that nasty.

Was anyone out there fishing closer to Fire Island Inlet and get caught in this? Did it materialize at all? I kept my eye on the weather all day, and it never got threatening in the Jones Inlet area.

Was working in Sayville on the bay. Around 12 heard thunder and then it got really dark and started to poor. Saw a cloud that did look like starts of a water spout. It really came out of nowhere. Check the radar on the phone at 11 there was nothing at 12 it was all red on the south shore east of FI inlet

We are in Oakdale and my wife told me it was a CRAZY cell that blew through town around that time. Blew some deck furniture in the pool!!!

Is it me or have we had some CRAZY t-storms this year?? Seems they are MUCH more violent than the storms we usually get on the Island.

Wednesday. Had engine trouble and anchored up to try bellying before limping back, just due south of the Massapequa Water Tower at about 10AM. an hour later a grey lowering cloud approaches from over or on line with the 2nd Wantagh. We got a heavy drizzle for about twenty minutes as the cloud slowly passed over, and felt one and then a second DOWNDRAFT of WARM air. Uh - oh, says my buddy. Just a few minutes later we saw lightening and heard thunder, our guess was that the storm intensified just about over the Amityville RR station, and continued on moving to Pinelawn etc on a northeasterly direction. Definitely not the usual when most storms hit us after the Bronx.

Kayaking out of Timber Point saw that thing approaching and headed for shelter. Beached the boats and got into the truck just in time. Very heavy downpour, lightning, hail followed by gusty wind. Lasted about 20 minutes and the dirt roads were turned into rivers. Warned two other kayakers who, inexplicably, were about to launch just as we hit the beach. Glad they took our advise. Twenty minutes later the sun came out and it was like it never happened.

I guess the location of this storm depends on where they were referencing Great South Bay. I assumed that would begin at the Wantagh Parkway. The weather service must have picked a reference point further to the east.
