Do you think that the 525 mag is powerfull enough for PB bass and blues with 30# line (jigging)? Is the drag strong enough or am I going to bend a shaft etc. by using 30# line on this surf reel?

I usually use a daiwa 30shv or 40shv with 30-40# line (excellent drags and cranking power. The 30shv can do 15.4 pounds of drag and the 40shv 17.6 pounds), but I just want to try it since the 525 mag would be a pleasure to use. It would lighten up the set-up even more and with the more narrow spool it'll be less burdensome to level + it's a pleasure to cast. The shv's also cast very well, but I imagine distance will be even better with the penn 525 mag.

I am not worried about the low capacity that I will have on the 525 mag with 30# line because bass and blues, especially on 30# line are not going to take very long runs.....that's at least been my experience even with 30 pounders. If this is not recommended i'll just load this reel with 17# line like I usually do and just use it as a back up surf reel, since my surf rods now already have matching reels.

Try some Sufix Seige in the 20lb test strength. You will pack lots on that little reel and that particular line waaay overtests, like most of the Sufix lines do.

You'll have no issues with that reel and line combo.

best, Lep

I had that reel a few years ago. Never jigged bass with it but I did liveline and chunk plenty of fish with it. It will surely do the job you are looking to do.

I also caught many a fat blackfish with it and it always performed for me. Just be sure to keep on top of the maintenance on that reel. It needs some TLC once in a while.
