Could be....

Another Atlantic Halibut!

Hear about these a couple of times a year. They used to be very prolific, but , like a lot of fish, have been over harvested. They are definitely more frequent in more northerly waters. But, considering the long cold winter, there might be some inshore in our area.

Let us know if it is a fluke or aa "fluke".

Yeah I heard about that fish today . . .

While I hanging out with Mark Flynn over at his shop. But hte story has gotten a little twisted over the past day or so.

What happened was that the original report was that the fish was caught in "40" and the second-party reteller thought the dragger capt meant "Feet".

He did not. He meant "Fathoms." Just a bit of a difference. Like about 50 miles off the beach.

Got this right from another dragger captain who called in a report of a catch of 25,000 lbs of squid to Mark via single side band.

So now you know "The rest of the story."

Could be? If it is true it would have been caught in at least 40 fathoms...Friend of mine is a dragger out of Shinne**** and he's been dragging the fluke all winter either 40 miles off Montauk or in the Canyon. They just lowered his limit to 150 pounds a day, it was 500 a day.

Could you imagine seeing a 20lb. fluke come up...

at the end of your rod. Holy Jeez what the **** would you do? I know get net and get it in the boat but after that? I was fishing this summer on my friends boat off Jones Inlet and one of the guys got a 12.5 and that looked huge coming up in a big circle. A 20lber. must but look like a big brown car door coming up.
I wonder where they go in the summer if you hear of commercial guys netting them once in a while. I know the biggest fluke caught was I believe around 22lbs. But I haven't heard anything near 20 in a long time. Are these 20 lb fish to smart to get caught by rod and reel after all they didn't get to be 20 lbs. by being stupid and going after everything or they would have been caught by now.
