If I'm not mistaken...They went out of Buisness 2 years ago...The only place I was able to get it was at Lighthouse Marine Supply in Aquobogue. I believe they bought all stock from the company before they went BYE BYE...I've been using the stuff for years and it's a great product!!

where can i get a red bushel bag the commercial clammers use?

I use those red bags which hold about 600 necks, they typically have an onion farm logo on them. Any fish market which buys shellfish directly from harvesters will have them and often provide them at no charge. East Hampton town trusties also provide bags but they charge for theirs.

There are smaller blue bags also available. Those bags hold about 250 necks and they are used by aquaculture companies who grow mussels up north and clams down south. Every fish market has those as well.

hearing some good things about the collinite this yr. been very hapy with garrys in the past. which ones are you guys using? and do i need the collinite wash as well, ive been using the purple ****e first to clean the winter grime off. i know a lot of these polymer based waxes and cleaners you have to follow there steps pretty closely to get the desired results.

Garry's? No more.

Well, I've always been happy with Garry's cleaner wax. Used it for many years.

Up 'til this season.

Because of my on-going health issues my many friends and crewmembers volunteered to asist with this season's Spring boat prepping. One of my "main men" brought his "good stuff" - which I initially refused to allow him to use on my boat. But after he absolutely insisted and I saw the results - forget it, THAT'S what I'm using from now on.

What was it?

Well, you guys that have preached about Collinite products have been 100% on the money.

Billy first hand applied and hand removed a light treatment with the Collinite Fiberglass Cleaner - which took the mudiness right out of the gelcoat - without ANY real aggressive rubbing or buffing whatsoever. Had to be more of a chemical process than a mechanical one, but whatever - it worked GREAT on my 21 yr old hull. I haven't seen THAT particular shade of white in many seasons.

That was always the knock on how I handled this chore. Because my rig is getting so old, I have refused to compound the old gelcoat for the past 8 or so seasons. Instead, I've relied on the cleaner aspect of the Garry's cleaner/wax and truth be told it hasn't been all that aggressive at getting the dirt out of the gelcoat. So my brite white hull has always looked a triffle muddy when viewed in the right light. While this Spring regimen has been pretty decent for the hull's overall shineyness, its been bad for the color tone.

That Collinite cleaner took my hull right back to a VERY brilliant white - without the nasty aggressive buffing that regular glass compounds require.

Billy followed the cleaner up with Collinte "Insulator Wax" - which put an even better sheen on the hull than my old favorite - Garry's did.

I'm sold on the Collinite line and will continue with their products from here forward.

If you do want to use Garry's - Freeport Marine is always well stocked with it as is www.boatfix.com - which is where I do alot of my on-line boat stuff shopping. Good prices on that site - for sure.

best, Lep

Mike,
If you just looking for something to put a good shine in places where the gel coat isn't real dirty or really oxidized I would recommend Mary Kate's Maxiwax. That's what I use where using the buffer os too much of a PITA and it works just great. Not as good as compounding and the collonite but still pretty good.

What Lep said guys. He's right on the dime about the Collinite products.

I've been using Collinite for years, its the best. The wax itself is only a wax and won't clean or polish the gelcoat, so if your looking for a one step deal I'd look towards something else like Gary's.

The boat cleaner is terrific, but I use a medium cut rubbing compound every 3 or 4 years. They key is to apply the rubbing compound by hand very lightly, then wipe the excess of the haze off to the point where there is a just a slight haze/residue left, then using a buffing wheel set on low to buff it out. If you use Collinite wax though you only need to buff with compound every 3 or 4 years.

BTW Rubbing compound, especially a medium cut compound is pretty benign as long as you DONT APPLY WITH A BUFFINC WHEEL. WHen applied with a buffing wheel that compound becomes expoentially more aggressive. Always apply by hand.

As for the various Collinite's the Paste Wax No.885 is the very best. BUT its VERY HARD to apply and remove, but I guess thats why its soo good. I personally use the Insulator Wax, as it works perfectly for my application.

This picture if of 20 year old gelcoat.

Out of curiousity, my boat is on its 3rd year. The hull is in very good shape, but do you think i should use a cleaner wax(outside collinite) and than use collinite as a final wax coat???

I would use a fine compound to clean the hull, like 3M finesse and then use the collonite over that. You can compound the **** out of most hulls without worrying about going through the gel coat.
