I am new to fly fishing this year. I have been doing alot of homework and reading these threads. Is there any preference to the two piece rods or the four piece rods.

I am looking at Redington, Orvis, and Cabelas. All of the outfits I am looking at are around 250-300 for combos.

Any feedback welcome. I did look for a previous post on this but did not see one.

It all comes down to preference and usage.

If you plan on traveling then I would recommend a 4 piece. If you plan on staying local then a 2 piece will do just fine. I have a 2 and a 4 piece trident both perform well the only thing that has happened to me with my 4 piece was when I was into school of blues and doing alot of casting I forgot to retighten the sections and when I hooked up one of my sections snapped off at the ferrule end. This could also happen with a two piece but it is easier to tighten up a top and bottom instead of checking all of you sections. Orvis fixed the rod but it took a couple of weeks so if you only have one rod this could be a BIG inconvenience. I hope this helps also make sure you get a good warranty no matter what you go with because accidents do and will happen.

These days there is not difference is strength or reliability between a 2 and 4 piece rod. Travel and storage is easier with a 4 piece but that's about it.

I've owned a two-piece for about 4 years, and just bought a new rod that is a four piece. I like how the four piece breaks down into shorter sections. Its easier to stow at home and much easier to travel with because it will fit in a suitcase. Either way you go I would recommend budgeting for a case that holds and protects your rod and reel. You may want to add Temple Fork Outfitters to the setups you are considering. They are getting a lot of good press, and are inexpensive ($150 for a 9' 10wt 4 piece, didn't include case).

I like my 4 piece over my 2 piece. Like others said, storage is easier as well as travel.
Cabelas sells a G*LOomis combo, I beleive in 8wt, that would be a good quality rod at a decent price. Enough to handle most east coast fish.
I also read Lefty SWFF book which as a beginner, I found full of useful gear info.
Good Luck and welcome to the addiction!
