Looking for a recommendation for a fluke reel to be used in the Great South Bay/Captree area. We usually fish with 3-4 ounces of weight and drift with a squid/spearing combo. I would like to give a reel to each of the guys in my wedding party. Thanks for the help.

All great suggestions. In that price range I'm partial to the Abu 6500C3, so that's what I'd go with.

Corsair

I'm on my 4th season with a shimano corsair (400A?) and it's holding up well. I use it for blackfish too.

I had the same reel for several years, for the life of me, I do not know what I did with it, though, lol ! Always liked it for light tackle inshore stuff, but I was under the impression that Shimano stopped making them. Would you know if this is true or not?

JC - Shimano replaced the Corsair with the Corvalus. After working on both over the past several seasons, I repsectfully suggest that BOTH are to be avoided - and to look at the Cardiff instead.

Thanks, I thought they had replaced it with another model, couldn't think of the name though. I don't recall having any major issues with my Corsair, but then again, I didn't have it too long before misplacing it . Coincidentally, I was in Causeway today, and was thinking of getting a Calcutta, most likely either the 50 or 100 ( not sure if that's the correct model#, I'm unfamiliar with Calcuttas, but after hearing so many people rave about them, I'm seriously thinking of one).

Thanks again!!

The CT50B Calcutta is a TERRIFIC and very neat LITTLE reel. I just had a semi-famous member of our Noreast family on my boat last weekend and he brought his new 50B out to play with the flounders. I got to try it out for a bit - WOW what a nice piece. WAAAAY overbuilt for the applications that you could use it in - and that translates out to a very long and happy ownership experience.

If I didnt already own a pair of itsy-bitsy old-time Abu ProMax 1600C reels, I'd definitely want to add a CT50B to me collection.

The CT100B ain't too shabby either, but that 50B, its just . . . special.

Thank you for that review, and for the correct model# ;). As always, very thorough and informative. I have tried out several Calcuttas also over the years since they came out, I was always very impressed as well.
