Report location Rhode Island > Rhode Island > Narragansett Frances Fleet PM trip
Fishing method Boat
« Previous Report Next Report »

Since I was in Rhode Island yesterday, so I brought my fishing gear and went on Frances Fleet Sunday PM fluke/Sea Bass trip.

There was a strong thunder storm hitting RI in the morning but it quickly moved out to the east. I arrived around 10am and had a blast catching snapper off the dock using sabiki on my super light spinning setup. For half-day trip, boat doesn't go too far, basically just outside the inlet off the coast but it's deep 90-110 ft. Snapper did not work for me, I guess its flat body spin too much in the current.

Saw the AM trip back, very crowded, 70+ people. Heard fishing was slow and lots of tangles. PM trip had about 20 people, much comfortable. First couple drifts I had two decent fluke bite on fresh squid & spearing combo but no hooking up. I changed to shorter leader with bare hook on squid/spearing and got my first keeper fluke. Also try Gulp and spro, not working. Later Capt drifted over sticky rocky bottom near lobster pots, and I lost my rig to the bottom. Tied up a new rig with a spiner blade and got my 2nd keeper fluke on a ribbon/spearing combo. Only a handful of keeper fluke (18") and some sea bass caught for the entire boat, Capt & mates worked hard but it's very slow bite.

Overall it's nice weather and relax fishing on Frances (haven't fished them for several years) except the traffic congestion on I-95 coming back to NY.
