Report location New York > Western Sound > outside hempstead
Fishing method Boat
« Previous Report Next Report »

Finally a nice night got out with the little bro and tried outside hempstead harbor against my gut feeling to head west due to the recent reports from people saying outside hempstead was hot plus I saw the fleet off of Matinecock. I headed to the west side instead of joining the fleet and had one run-off then we relocated to more out towards the middle and had another run-off and thats it. Anybody else have any luck out there? I remember ALOT more bunker last year I haven't seen a real nice pod yet. Maybe some one can answer this for me, since the fish are migrateing from the Hudson with as far as I have heard the majority of them still being in the Hudson why would so many people be concentrateing on Hempstead Harbor and not trying to meet the fish halfway by fishing say outside LNB or by the Throgs Neck is it because of how good Hemp. was last year or is it actually producing for people?

The fish are all over down here! Hempstead seems to be hot as a majority of bait seems to be collecting there but the Throggs Neck Bridge on up is definitely producing. More room to fish in Hempstead as opposed to all huddling up along the Fort. Top of the tide for many. Not much bait in Little Neck yet. Started out fair in April and then got pretty quiet with rarely a splash. Hudson River Anglers are reporting loads of big bass still up the river so there much more action to come. Also tons of Bass are being caught around the other side as well, Jamaica Bay, Rockaways, Kennedy Airport and so on for the Atlantic Ocean side run. Bunkers are scattered and few here but more anglers are reporting Bluefish hookups so expect the Bunker pods to start coming through in force now. I’m hearing loads of pods on the Atlantic side, Jamaica Bay, Rockaways, Kennedy. It's going to explode as the water temp is getting close to 60 ... Wink

Me too..

Jets28,
I know how you feel.Gave it a good effort last night over there. Started around 7pm and did not come in til 1:00am with only 1 short runoff. Moved twice but marked a ton of bait and had splashes all around the boat in both spots. Fresh bunker and frozen for chunks. Hard to believe with the reports I've been reading from the party boats this week....

bite

The bite up here in Hempstead is not good yet..YES, there are scattered schools of bass and some people are getting into them..But it has not started yet...The bass are holding up in small areas

If you look at last years reports, The action just exploded out of nowhere one day and it took off rom there...That took place around May 29th or so....Before that everyone, including me, were worried that there were no bunker and that the bass run is way too late and then it turned out to be one of the best years on record.

I think your best shot at consistent bass would be more to the west..In the Fort Totten area...I would be there right now but my marina is in Hempstead Harbor and I am not going to burn all that gas to go there.

Also water temp readings are 54.2-55.0 in and around Hempstead..Need a couple more degrees.

For your information..The Island Current I and II have been fishing that spot for the past 4 nights and have done VERY well on the bass....The bite has been after midnight at night as of late and thats why you didnt catch stripers....But the Captain was right to stick to the same productive numbers...Why change a spot that has produced SO many stripers as of late when no one else is doing that good.

These detailed posts are very helpful. It does seem spotty right now. Some guys are nailing them on any given night while others strike out. I'm with Algreek. It should explode any day now. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate just a bit. Thanks for these excellent reports.

If I get out tonight I'm heading west. But with the way it's been latelly one fish nights or 2 run-off nights I don't know if it's worth fighting the possbile T-Storms and gas prices yet since I'm heading out of Hemp. Harbor.

Looking for a strong line of thunderstorms tonight from about 5:00pm.-9:00p.m...some of them are going to produce strong winds, hail and lightning...Be careful if you go out there before the line of storms moves in...

I will be out again Saturday in the a.m..Sunset and on..

Yeh I am always scared to be out there and have those storms roll in but I hate when I don't go out and then the storms never come in.
