Fishing method Boat
« Previous Report Next Report »

Took off yesterday (hell or high water we were going fishing) with my two brothers (King Tuna, Cobia Kid) and WhiteyJonas to do some Blackfishing...

We got to the boat and watched them gas up the boat up then warm the motors up and finally about 10-12 hardy souls boarded with the hopes of hooking a huge TOG!!!

Well they told us they weren't going out unles we all paid them double fares?? I was very upset!!!!

We ALL cleared off that boat and many of the disappointed fares jumped on the Mackerel boat at the next dock...

We steamed east and south looking for the schools of Mackerel. The fishing was very spotty with a few fish here and there. Some caught a few while others got skunked. The weather was a bit rough, with ice forming all over the boat on the way home...

I know four pissed off guy's who will never go fishing on that un-named party boat ever...

It wasn't so bad that they didn't want to go out i mean the weather was pretty bad but to try to double the fare was a slap in the face to all of us...

Man i'm still pissed off about that..

Anyway, a bad day fishing sure beats working!!!

Tight Lines!!!

Double Fare???

You animal, when I woke up on Monday I said there is no way Pete's going out in this weather. Double Fare.. Not Fair! Does this happen often I've never heard of such a thing? You're too nice, should have "named" this pirate.

See you soon.

Unfair

A friend and I had the same thing happen in Freeport a couple of weeks ago. They wanted an extra $30 a man to sail, on top of the $60 fare. They said they needed 10 guys to sail we only had 8. I wouldn't mind $10 extra, but some of these guys are ridiculous.

Party Boat Fares

These mne are trying to make a living by keeping there boats going all year round. It is very expensive to upkeep the maintanance on a fishing boat. It is reasonable to ask double the fare when only 8-12 people show up at the boat. The captain is barely making money with the cost of bait, mate, and fuuel, plus parts for maitance. I think that you should look at my perspective and not be Pissed of with the captain. If you don't like it simply leave. I would never argue because he like you is also trying to put food on the table for his family.

i doubt that is the OE you are talking about as they have went out w/ 5 fares in the past. I really dont know of any other good boats in sheeps head that are as good as the Oe that are toggin right now. both crew and catch wise

pirates is what they are called

I wouldnt care if they are trying to feed there family they should get a side job like most of us. capt tony of the angler in croobay will fish with four guys because he is a fisherman, and loves to fish he dont care how many people come on as long as who's on catch fish and he doesnt fish for the boat eiter.

shocking. (sarcasm) sheepshead bay is not know for its service to customers. with the exception of 2 boats i wont name (the ones carrying all the people while other boats accuse them of cutting fares while they are tied to the dock ) they are truely the worlds worst buisness men.

It's done that way from NY to Fla. and it's OK by me !

I have fished party boats my whole life and most anytime when there are not enuf fares they give you the option. Pay extra or NO SAIL. They know how much they need just to break even. If you don't like it don't pay it and just go home. Since when do these guys owe us a favor. Its a business. Grow up.

DOUBLE FARE ASKED BY SHEEPSHEAD BAY BOAT.

IT IS CERTAINLY TRUE THAT IF YOU THINK THE EXTRA FARE TO BE EXCESSIVE, YOU HAVE THE OPTION TO EITHER LEAVE AND GO TO ANOTHER BOAT, OR SIMPLY, GO HOME. MOST CAPTAINS IN SHB WILL SAIL WITH EIGHT OR SO PASSENGERS, BUT I GUESS THE COST OF FUEL HAS RISEN SO SHARPLY, THEY FEEL THAT THEY MUST PASS THAT EXTRA COST ON TO THE CUSTOMER. NOT HAVING BEEN THERE, I AM NOT AGREEEING OR DISAGREEING WITH THE ADDITIONAL CHARGE. I GUESS THAT IF I REALLY WANTED TO GO OUT THAT MORNING, I WOULD HAVE BOARDED, PAID AND CHALKED IT UP TO ECONOMICS. I'M JUST CURIOUS AS TO WHICH BOAT IT WAS, SO AS TO HAVE EXTRA FUNDS WITH ME IN CASE OF A SCENARIO SUCH AS YOU REPORTED. THANKS FOR THE REPORT, AND TIGHT LINES.

tight lines, everybody, practice catch and release.

MAYBE BECAUSE i'm a baby boomer but i remember back to when a party boat advertised it was only fising one side of the boat for blues or fluke.now cost are high and they fish all around the boat ,albeit shoulder to shoulder, don't these boats make there extra money at that time of year or could it be the the and they have the option to sail or not or could it be that the Gordon Gekko effect of wall st.has finally made it to fishing.i know when i go fishing i don't carry a roll of money with me,if the fare was $60 i never would have had 150 on me.taking into consideration of thje pool and taking care of the mates and cleaning the fish i probably have had about $110 -$120 on me,so if i had to double up how would i take care of the mates.i just don'tr tyhink its right for the boat to expect you too double up at the last moment,if 8 guys showed at 6 where willing and the last two couldn't than your making thesec guys look cheap.its up to the captain to set a minimum amount of fares that he needs and than sail or not sail, these guys may have the oppourtunity to go on another boat if they see that the one they are on is not filling up.
THANK GOD I HAVE MY OWN BOAT,AND THE REASON I GOT IT WAS I DIDN'T LIKE BLUEFISHING LIKE I WAS ON THE E TRAIN.

When was the last time any one of you guys that support these outrageuos fare increases have gone to the store to buy something, only to find the clerk telling you, if you want the item you have to pay double because it was a slow day. These boats make money all year round, they have to take the good with the bad. I don't remember a Captain ever saying, "Hey guys the boat is FULL, let's reduce the fare a little." Not to mention the ridiculous prices they charge for tackle, for the people that don't bring their own.

Despite this double fair offer. SHB still has pretty cheap fairs compared to other areas. Plenty of boats there for you to make a choice.

double fare

i have personally fished with capt. fred bird of the 'flying cloud' out of montauk........3 differant times, with only 3 fares, myself included. mr. bird is a true gentleman, and worked just as hard for 3 fares as he would for a full boat.........and no 'extra' charge

I haven't lived in NYC in a couple of years but I do try to go on the OE when I can spare the time during my visits. I was there Columbus Day weekend in 2005 and unfortunately the OE didn't go out that day because of a combination of bad weather and not enough fares. Glenn and Geoff apologized to me personally because they know I hardly get a chance to go out when I visit home. I didn't have a problem with it because as I told them, "Hey you guys are in a business and if it's doesn't make cents then I understand perfectly, no hard feelings and I'll see you guys on the next go around."

Bottom line is while fishermen who are in the partyboat business usually love their jobs, it doesn't mean they should lose money for the sake of it. Yes, sometimes they will go out with hardly any fares, but they shouldn't be expected to go out EVERYTIME under those circumstances. And if they offered to double the fare then it becomes the discretion of the customer. I would hazard to guess that even if they did sail after doubling the fare (depending on the amount of anglers) if they were that few then they probably still wouldn't have broke even.

Double fare

Wish you had named the boat so that we can make sure it never happens again.

the boat I believe you're talking about will sail with fewer people on nicer days, but it takes a lot more people to get them to sail on the nastier days.

You guys don't have a clue

Lets pretend the boat in question is the OE. It's 85' long, has large twin diesels, two mates, a galley cook and a captain. There is fuel est at 150 gals for the day, salary for 2 mates and a cook, bait, wear and tear. Lets add it up.

Fuel $375.00
Bait $150.00
Wages $300.00
Maintenance $100.00
Total $925.00

You have 10-12 guys show up at $40.00 each=$400.00-$480.00.
With the captain making zip for the day it's a $400.00-$500.00 loss.
