Afternoon trip with Capt. Jan on the Fretless for stripers Saturday found them biting on the outgoing at the inlet on live (and even dead) spot. Bass on every drift, but all shorts up to about 26 inches. Obviously, this is expensive fishing, so we headed out to the deep to prospect for cheaper prey. Ran out to the 80 foot line but didn't see any signs of birds or fish. Headed west -- I don't think there's much left to the east. At the old/new inlet we found some life. Lots of bait and pods of schoolie bass boiling up from time to time. A small group of boats joined in. Action was "spotty." We caught one bass on a remaining live spot. Got another trolling a small plug. Diamond jigs were not effective yesterday, though I did hook up and lost one bass on one and had several follow the jig to the boat. The bass were keying in on smaller bait. Just couldn't find a lure that interested them. Didn't seen the other boats hook up with anything but the every present and every annoying "cape shark."
