With the Miami winds blowing this weekend, my son hopped up home to NY. He managed 3 days of ice fishing to counterbalance his new life running his Miami charter business. On Thursday, he hit up Squantz Pond and Candlewood Lake for a bunch of nice sized bluegills and perch. Then a buddy took him to a secret pond where they beat up lots of big crappies.

Today, in 60 degree sunny weather, we took our two Rye/Mamaroneck high school fishing buddies up to the Catskills for some ice fishing. Despite the hot weather, we still had a foot of good ice on both Huntington Lake and Lake Superior. On Huntington, we caught loads of small bluegills. Not what we drove 100 miles for. We then hit Superior in the late afternoon. We drilled about 50 holes, finding scores of tiny perch and bluegills. At sunset, we set up the hydro glow and had a 20 minute epic bite on good sized crappies, one good perch and some big bluegills to save the trip.

This was Simon’s first ever ice fishing trip and the kid is smitten.

Tomorrow, Capt. Wylie heads back to Miami for a bunch of Charters later in the week once the winds tame themselves, including a couple of trips for a fellow nor’easter. The sailfish and kingfish are biting - some monster kings are around, and the tarpon bite has picked up with the cooler weather getting the shrimp moving. Come on down and join my son for some great warm weather fishing at very reasonable rates. Give him a call at 914-874-9697.

I tell ya , those damn crappies you can whip the water to a froth all day and not catch one and a soon as that sun stars going down they turn on ..good job sticking it out. I ended up taking a first timer too on Sat so we fished very local with only 5 perch and a bluegill to show for it in 2.5 hrs.

I like Pearl in a can,and Jim Beam Black, and chewing tobacco from a mail pouch sack.
