Fishing method Boat
« Previous Report Next Report »

YESTERDAY JOHN TELFER AND FRIENDS EXPERIENCED THE TYPE OF FISHING WE AS FISHERMAN ALL DREAM ABOUT! FROM THE TIME WE ALL FIRST TOUCH A FISHING ROD, WE ALL DREAM ABOUT CATCHING "THE BIG ONE".

THEY NOT ONLY CAUGHT "THE BIG ONE" BUT A LIMIT OF "BIG ONES".

WE BEGAN OUR DAY BY FLUKE FISHING ALLOWING US TO KILL SOME TIME FOR THE TIDE TO BE JUST RIGHT ON THE STRIPER ACTION. ACTION WAS NOT GREAT BUT DECENT AS WE LANDED 3 KEEPERS AND ABOUT 2 DOZEN SHORTS.

AFTER A SHORT TIME, CAPT. NICK GOT "THE CALL"(YOUR 12 PACK IS COMING LOL) FROM A BUDDY. WE IMMEDIATLY RUSHED THROTTLE DOWN STEAMING INTO THE AREA. BEFORE EVEN REACHING OUR DESTINATION THE SCREEN LIT UP LIKE 4TH OF JULY FIREWORKS. TOP TO BOTTOM WITH BASS.

WE PUT OUR BAITS OUT AND IMMEDIATLY THEY BEGAN GETTING CRUSHED. WHITE WATER ACTION ALL AROUND THE BOAT. IT LOOKED LIKE LITTLE BOMBS EXPLODING ON THE TOP WATER ALL AROUND US, SOME OF THE SICKEST STUFF IVE SEEN IN MY 15 YEARS OF WORKING ON THE WATER. FOR SOME ODD REASON THOUGH THE BASS WERE ONLY TOYING WITH OUR BAITS. WE COULD NOT GET A TAKER. CAPT. NICK SUMMONED ME TO PUT OUT THE SPOONS. BY THE TIME I PUT OUT THE 2ND SPOON WE WERE DOUBLED UP ON BIG BASS. WE LANDED OUR 2ND BIGGEST OF THE DAY(49.15LBS WEIGHED IN AT BAY PARK FISHING STATION) AND OUR SMALLEST OF THE DAY WHICH WAS JUST UNDER 37LBS.

AFTER RELOCATING THE FISH THEY GOT SKITISH AND WE LANDED 2 MORE IN THE MID TO LOW 40LB RANGE PUTTING US JUST 1 SHY OF OUR BOAT LIMIT. CAPT NICK THEN DECIDED TO PUT THE LIVE BAIT BACK OUT IN HOPES OF LANDING ONE ON THE BAIT. WE SEARCHED AND CAME ACROSS ANOTHER BODY OF FISH. THE BAITS WENT OUT AND WITHIN SECONDS WE HAD A TAKER. AFTER A FIGHT OF TUG OF WAR WITH THIS MONSTER WE FINALLY HAD THE BEAUTIFUL SPECIMEN NEXT TO THE BOAT AND ALL OF OUR EXACT THOUGHTS WERE, 'HOLY S*** THATS BIGGER THAN THE FIRST ONE".

I CAREFULLY LIPPED THE FISH AND GENTLY BROUGHT IT OVER THE RAIL AND INTO THE BOAT. CAPT. NICK IMMEDIATLY SAID, "GUYS THIS IS THE BIGGEST FISH IVE EVER HAD IN THIS BOAT AND IT IS EASILY OVER 50LBS. WE NEED TO RELEASE IT". AS SOON AS HE SAID THAT I WENT TO WORK TO FIND THAT THE HOOK WAS IN THE BACK OF THE MOUTH AND BLEEDING. I CUT THE LEADER PRAYING THAT UPON PUTTING IT IN THE WATER WHILE TRYING TO REVIVE IT THAT THE BLOOD WOULD CLOT AND THE BIG ONE WOULD BE ON ITS WAY. AFTER ABOUT 15 MINUTES OF TRYING TO REVIVE IT WE REALIZED IT WAS NOT GOING TO MAKE IT. WE BROUGHT IT BACK OVER THE RAIL AND HEADED IN TO WEIGH IT.

AT BAY PARK FISHING STATION WE PUT IT ON THE SCALE TO FIND THAT IT WEIGHED IN AT 51.70LBS. THEN WE ALL RELIZED THAT THE SAME ANGLER PAUL BENDER LANDED BOTH THE 49.15 AND THE 51.70. I COULDNT BEGIN TO EXPLAIN TO HIM WHAT AN ACCOMPLISHMENT IT WAS TO CATCH 2 FISH OF THAT SIZE LET ALONE IN A DAY, YET A LIFE TIME MEANT. IT CERTAINLY IS A "HUGE" ACCOMPLISHMENT, ONE THAT HE MIGHT PROBABLY NEVER EXPERIENCE AGAIN!

YESTERDAY WAS A DAY FOR THE HISTORY BOOKS FOR THESE ANGLERS, ONE THAT THEY WILL NEVER FORGET!!

NOW IN POSTING THIS I REALIZE IT MIGHT RUFFLE SOME FEATHERS WITH ALOT OF THE CATCH AND RELEASE GUYS. EVERYONE IS ENTITLED TO THEIR OWN OPINION, JUST LIKE THESE GUYS AS PAYING CUSTOMERS ARE ENTITLED TO EITHER KEEP THEIR LEGAL CATCH OR RELEASE FISH ALL DAY. IF IT WAS UP TO MYSELF AND CAPT. NICK EACH OF THESE FISH WOULD HAVE BEEN RELEASED. WE DID EVERYTHING IN OUR POWER TO RELEASE THE 51.70 LBER, BUT SOMETIMES THINGS DONT WORKOUT HOW YOU WANT THEM TO!

ALL IN ALL A TRIP "FISHERMAN DREAM ABOUT" ON THE NO TIME!

-SCOTT

Amazing catch / amazing day!

Damn shame you couldn't save that last fish. New NY keep limit for 2015 is now one per angler, even on boats, after all. Legally, the DEC would have had you release her to die, but I think morally that would be a shame and a waste. Your position is understood up

Congrats to the lucky angler. He'll be on that high for a while, I'm sure.

Thanks for being brave enough to post a great story and pics for us to enjoy. It's certainly a controversial issue and stories like this come under scrutiny so often, I could see how you'd be hesitant to share.

We'd all be lucky to land a single cow that size before we die. Two in one trip, that's something to dream about.

Thank you for the great comment but it is one per angler including Capt/Mate/Crew etc. So with that being our 5th fish(3 anglers, Capt and Mate) we would of been legal to keep the fish either way! DEC would of done nothing more than tell us what a nice catch we put together!

WHEN SKYDIVING ISNT ENOUGH, YOU DO IT WITH FULL GEAR AND ENOUGH FIRE POWER TO F*** UP A SMALL COUNTRY!! RLTW!

Good to know. I thought it actually mattered who caught the fish.
