I figured I'd kick off the fishing aspect of my weekend by catching the top of the outgoing Saturday am around 4am. Got out of bed around 3:30, heard the wind honking, thought for a second that I should hop back in bed- then remembered how short the season is so suited up, grabbed my rod and headed down to the surf. Wind was howling from the S, the ocean was really kicked up, kept my fingers crossed for no weeds. First cast, clothesline of weeds-- uggggg.

"Fished" around for about an hour, battling the surf , wind and doing my part to de-weed the ocean. Think I had one bump but it could have been flotsam. After an hour of torture called it a morning, should have stayed in bed.

After a day with the family Saturday, I got home around 10pm.I was deciding on whether to head out or go to sleep and catch the top of the tide of the tide in the morning- decided on the morning. Missed the 4am wake-up but answered the 5am alarm. Got down around 5:30 to a N,NW wind and great surf. Throwing an SP , was hoping the weeds moved out- first cast- WEEDS. Worked around right in front of my place taking short casts to see if the fish were still in the wash and after a few pounds of weeds I had a hit and miss- yup- fish still there. Decided to head for the open beach instead of the rocks ,to see if I could find some weedless water. About an hour in, still battling the weeds I hooked up. After a few jumps and a little run I beached a nice fish through the weeds- quick pic and released. As the sun started to come up I noticed there were plenty of schoolies flipping close to the beach. Stayed with the SP and had a few more hits and misses and dropped another decent fish . Decided to go to a popper to try to keep above the weeds. I was throwing it right in the middle of flipping bass but couldn't raise a fish. Hate leaving fish to try to find fish but decided to try to find some weedless water. Walked east a bit and the weeds started to clear out. Found some great looking water that was pretty clear and threw a couple of casts with the popper for no action. I was getting ready to go back to the SP and threw out the popper for once last cast. Heaved out a cast, two pops and had a LARGE bass roll on it. It didn't explode on it- simply rolled over the top, grabbed the popper- flipped it's big tail in the air and dove down. My heart raced a beat, my line came tight, I set the hook into what felt like a big rock then nothing!!! UGGGGGG. Missed it. That alone would have been worth the price of admission. That kept me working the popper for another 10 minutes or so but didn't raise another fish. Switched over to the swimmer again and on my first cast had a nice hit immediately and landed a quality schoolie. Worked the area for a little while for one more decent fish and a couple of hits and misses. Then the dreaded happened- phone started ringing and noticed it was almost 8am and the wife and boy were looking to start the day. I had about a half an hour walk back without casting, got home an hour later with one more bass on the beach and two more misses and a sort of unhappy, hungry wife.

I had baby sitting duty all day Sunday and after a fun day with my boy got home around 7:30 last night and was in the surf by 8pm. Wind laid down, still great surf and NO WEEDS- hallelujah! Working the SP minnow ( hat tip to my buddy for the color recommendation- thanks) I was expecting the tug on every cast- a half an hour later not a touch??? Decided to head to a spot I found last week at low that I thought would hold fish. Took a 10 minute walk, first cast, still no weeds, and right at the end of my retrieve I got drilled- couple of jumps and a short run later I got a nice fish to the beach-- by the fight I thought the fish would be bigger but happy to land it anyway-fish took the teaser- quick pic and released. Worked the area for another half an hour landing a couple more quality fish. Fish on both the teaser and the SP-- pretty even ratio. Tide started to head out and after 10 casts without a touch decided to call it a night. All the fish caught Sunday were really healthy looking and feisty. The weekend started off terribly but ended great.

Simply superb.upupup

I see why everyone got excited when you posted after an apparent hiatus.

Am I right in that it looks like the larger fish within your catches veered away from the SP?

Looks like they might have been even more interested IN(type-o) the teaser.

Just looking to confirm what I suspect from my personal experiences using it.

Thanks. As for the teaser vs lure- I've caught bass to 36" on the teaser when throwing a bottle plug and tiny bass on the bottle that left the teaser alone. I've also landed bis bass on the bottle that left the teaser alone so I've personally not noticed any pattern- other than when fish are on small bait I get a lot more teaser action regardless of the plug I'm throwing. Nice bass out in Mtk.by the way - great job up

Hi Tom, I got weeded out in the same slop Sunday morning. It was like spinach soup. I was 1 mile west of your 20. I didn't have a top-water in my bag...4:30 am to sunrise. Honkin' west wind.

Weeds on early Saturday?

Nice report! I see I’m not the only one that tries to get some fishing in before Daddy duty begins, and a wife that doesn't understand part of fishing is I may not catch a fish/keeper.
I was out from 3:30-9AM Saturday and I barely saw or came up with any weeds. I threw my SS Bottle, SP (blue mackerel) and a hammered A47…no weeds. I was getting pestered with picking sand flees off my trebles though but no weeds. I wonder if it had something to do with where I was casting. I would only cast just to the west side of any rocks or pilings just in case any fish was trying to lay ambush from the ripping current, and to insure the lure would swim with the current not against it. Much like where an eddy would form in a rapped

If you ask me why do I go fishing the answer will always be I'm a Antoine, Antoines go fishing!
