Fishing method Surf

After what seemed like a decade, I finally kicked off my fall season last week. I went down Monday night around low tide to just look around a bit. I did bring a rod but water was all browned up. I found some nice areas to work later in the week but no fish or hits.

Wednesday I had fishing on my brain all day. Tide and moon set up perfectly and figured the water would clear up by then. Got home looked outside, saw nice water had dinner with my family , finally got my boy to bed and headed down to the surf with high expectations. Walked down to great surf , tossed out a bomber and weeded-- ugggggg. Walked around looking for fishable water but between the surf, wind , sweep and weeds just wasn't happening. Worked a bunch of areas varying cast distances, getting a crank or two then deweeding - nothing doing.

Next shot was Saturday night. Got down around 10pm to great conditions and no weeds. Working a bomber, on my third cast I almost had the rod pulled out of my hands. After using nothing but ultralight rods for a few months and catching freshwater bass, I simply wasn't really ready for anything bigger than a couple of pounds hitting my plug. Needless to say , didn't get a good hookset and missed my first hit of the fall. A few minutes later I hooked up with a schoolie in the wash- took the bomber. Spent the next three hours landing a few and dropping a few-- pretty even ratio. All the fish were in tight and fish took the bomber, the SP minnow and one teaser fish. All about the same size , 20-22" or so.

Working my way home I had my first hit out at the end of the cast. Fish hit as soon as my plug landed, set the hook, bigger fish, gave a few head shakes , took some line and gone. Wrapped it up around 2 with my first real session in the books-- great way to kick it off.

Ran down last night around 9:30 or so. Incoming tide, stiff S wind, great surf , no weeds to speak of. Ready from the get go I had a fish on a couple of casts in , dropped it. Worked the area for a few more bumps but no hook ups . Next stop, 2nd cast, decent fish on -- dropped. Few more bumps - no more hookups. Ran into a buddy ( good to see you again) and fished with him for a while. He had a bump out of the gate, I had some more bumps and another hookup but dropped it. After a while switched up to a bottle plug to combat the wind and surf-- no takers . Switched back to an SP to work my way home. My buddy split and on the next stop I hooked up with a schoolie and finally landed one-- now 1 for 3 in landing ratio. Quick pic and released and 2 casts later had another decent fish on-- a couple of head shakes, one jump, a little line off the spool and gone. 1 for 4 and time to go. A little rusty still but glad to have my feet back in the surf and glad there are some fish around. I'll see if I can sell a third night in a row to my wife.

Hey Rich- hope all is well. I'd be better off if I did move inland. Living on the beach and not being able to get out is torturous.
