Fishing method Surf

I had gotten a lot of texts and messages asking where I'd been and how things were. Sorry if I didn't respond and thanks for checking in. It had unfortunately been a tough few months , so fishing wasn't on the menu. Fortunately everything is ok now - thanks for checking in everyone. Last week, for the first time in about 4 months, I got a chance to exhale. Last night I got a chance to get back to "living" ( aka- fishing). I only had a short window but I couldn't have been happier to get my feet in the surf and a lure in the ocean. I got down to great looking surf ( I wouldn't have cared if it was brown , flat as table and low tide ) around 6:45. Looked to be top of the incoming , slight S wind. I decided to work the open beach for a little while with a popper to see if any of those blues I had been reading about were around. Some weeds but not unfishable. I spent about 15 minutes working around without a tap then went to work a few rocks. Walking up to my first intended stop a couple of surfers just hopped in on one side and a guy was soaking clams on the other ( nice meeting you Mark) so I moved on to the next stop. Weeds were getting worse so I kept on top with the popper for no hits. Kept heading west looking for weedless areas . After a few stops with no luck on the popper I threw on a bomber. Worked that for a while but between the weeds, the lack of line on my spool ( never got around to taking care of my gear this winter)and the wind , it was an effort in futility. I switched up to a rubber shad and worked a few more spots for no action before I had to head back ( I forgot how quickly time flies while fishing) . I made it back to the first spot I wanted to fish and the surfers were gone.I had a few more minutes before I had to go pick up my wife and boy . I walked up and tossed the shad into a perfect little rip by the rocks, let it just hang out and wobble in the rip for a second - and with my first real expectations of a strike on the night, I started to slowly crank the reel, anticipating a strike that immediately came! Nice solid hit, set the hook and fought my first fish of the year to the beach! Fish took some line and gave a great fight. Got it to the beach , quick pic and released . Fish went about 10lbs. Awesome way to end my first trip out and it felt great to be fishing/ living again. Again,I appreciate all those who checked in and sorry if I didn't get back to you. I'll be back at it this weekend- see you in the suds.

back in business!

We missed ya!! Well, at least I did because your regular posts always make me wish I lived closer to LI than I do.

Anyway, hope things are better now and that we will see many posts this summer.

P.S. Congrats on the first bass from the shore on your first trip out.

Stripers are like carp, except edible !!
